Harpoons

What are you using for your harpoon pole? How long are you making them? I have been to home depot and lowes and the dowels that they carry is just not going to do the job. They don't seem to be stiff enough and they are mighty crooked. That is 1 1/4 inch , 1 1/2 inch dia at 8 to 10 ft.

I figured a good hardwood dowel (heavy) would assist in driving the point home.

Also, I found this site up north that has high quality hardwood dowels. I am thinking about ordering a couple. The shipping is 32 dollars for 8 ft dowells and is the same up to 75 lbs. So if you live near Orlando and are interested we could share the cost of shipping. Here is the site:

I am looking at a 1 1/2 inch 8 ft hickory dowel at $3.66 per ft.
If you know of a better deal, I should would like to hear about it.

Hey, if I go the hardwood route, I will have to mount if over a window in my living room. so I can look at it all year long!!!

You're making a hunting tool to harvest gators that's going to be abused, not make a work of art. Pretty does not harvest gators, practical does, along with the "right tool at the right time" and knowledge of how to use it.

I sell hundreds of the HD based poles (including the bent ones) that have killed thousands of gators, along with my personal poles that harvest a hundred gators or so each year.

Need advice, call Me & I'll fill you in. 813-968-6154

I've never had any complaints from the folks that use my stuff either. Your not gonna do anything except punch a sharp point into the gator, the pole stays away from the gator if done right. Feel free to call me also , but gatorstick has as much experience as anyone around, if not more, his feet has even started to web between the toes, being around dem gators so much. Hopefully he's got thick skin too. LOL

I can't advise on what kind of wood to use. One's I've seen have all been run-o-the mill yellow pine dowels from Home Depot/Lowes.

That's good logic that "pretty don't harvest - practical does".

But if you have your heart set on hardwood, save the shipping and check into
Smyth Lumber on All American Drive between Edgewater & 441
or
Thomas Lumber on Gore just east of I-4 (also in Winter Park near where Orange & Fairbanks meet)

And there is also Woodcraft Supply in Cassleberry (I can't remember the name of the strip mall, but it's between 17-92 and Red Bug Rd on the north side of 436)

All these places supply lumber for the upscale markets, and as a former worker in some 15 & 20 million dollar homes, they use lots of that kind of hardwood.

yep, you pay for it.

matt.

Cajun,
No webbing for me. That's the swim with the dolphin folks.

I do think we should start an ad campaign for the bunny hugger Yankee of something like "Commune with nature & become one with one of God's Creatures! Pay us good money to smear yourself in carrion & swim with a prehistoric creature, the alligator. It's an experience of intimacy you'll never forget. Never mind the dolphin experience, do the life changing thrill."

This could help in the fight to stop development and assure the Yankee only visits the South once............and produce, bigger, fatter & dumber gators.

Is this not a win/win?

Diver,
We use the poles that you hang your clothes on, ever seen them in someones closet. That's what you need, go to your local hardware store and ask them to get you some. Wrap some reflective tape around it so you can hit it with a light after your Big kill and find it.

Would work but illegal. Sounds like real fun idea though. Too many laws.......... Maybe we can work on a "spudgun" class of hunting rules. Interesting to see what would happen with a diller.

Gatorstick, thats one of the best vacation ideas I've heard in a long time.Who knows it might even catch on for dem spring breakers. Wonder if we could get AAA to indorse this? Back when I was young-errrrrrrr, there were some fellows :D taken gators out of Okefenokee swamp and expected to find ole Jimmy Hoffa's remains in there  , we always thought someone dumped him over that big ole swamp for gator bait. I'll contact AAA , might get sum free advertisment. LOL  Later

DSD,

As the others said regular pine wooden dowels work well. Only piece of advice is go with the 1 1-/2". The 1-1/4" are too light in my opinion. East coast lumber sells them over here in Cocoa as I imagine any lumber yard does. You could also check with Cold Steel (the knife company) they make a pole for there hog spear which you could probably adapt. The bottom line though is that Home Depot's will work just fine.
