has anyone run any ford bb like the 429 or 460

Ford Power has a 514 I believe and he could probably fill ya in on some dos and don'ts.. I build a lot of em for other applications (Mostly truck pulling) and I think if they're put on a little bit of a diet can be one helluva good airboat engine. And even at full weight are a much better engine platform than some of the marine engines used. One negative is redrive systems, but Stinger has the adapters.

Take it from someone who builds a whole Lotta motors....the 385 series Ford is a goody!

hot dang maybe another lost soul. i think they are great motors, built mine cause all i heard was they wouldnt hold up, on an airboat application. mine so far has done well but it also doesnt have 50 hrs on it either. i have beat the sh!t out of a few in mud truck and they all held up, and was turnin them motors 7-7200 on truck rods. spend some money and i dont believe you'll have any trouble. get felber to build ya one im impressed with his knowledge, john kaase and keith kraft would be good ones too. scott

I think they are great engines, just a little heavy. Lots of internal goodies available now at good prices. The right combo of prop and box will immediately overcome any short stroke related issues and the 514s take care of it also with added stroke.

Don't worry about stroke...I have a 5 1/4" arm on the shelf :) Got a 672 Shortblock and Hemi heads too! Kaase in my honest opinion is THE BEST BBF builder in the world and a super cool guy. But I can Git-R-Done too if ya need some help. ;)

if you can get a copy of the gto airboat tape that they made around 1999 when I bought my
boat they had a big block ford on it..very impressive

i dont know if i got the right combo, but im runnin a 2.68:1, 3 blade 80" wide prop on the three mark im bumping rev limiter at 5800 rpm and runnin ouuta prop. it runs dry with ease, will jump up on plane at26-2700 and hold it at 2100. and has been great on fuel.
felber what inch motor would you build based off of a 460 plat form?

Well I can tell ya right now (As you already know), you don't have enough prop to harness the power, but you may have the right prop to have a good running boat. You probably have enough motor to swing a 82" 4-blade, but you may hate the TQ roll. Dunno much about your whole boat combination, but I'd tend to think you'd spend the right money to buy another blade and a 4B hub..And I'd keep it the same Diameter.

As for size of the engine? That would depend on whether it was a production block or a SVO. If it's a production block, I wouldn't go beyond a 4.300" crank and would also stud it and put a girdle in place. If you're runnin a 2-bolt block on an airboat makin good power, it may not blow up, but when you tear it down you'll see it's walking the mains and the block will be junk.

If you have an SVO (A-460) the sky's the limit. A BBF is 10.3" deck and has a high cam location, making over 4.75" cranks EASY to put in. And in my opinion is damn near the strongest block ever produced...sick, sick, sick power potential...but unfortunately even heavier...

cntrystunter check with priority 1 on here also, he has experimented with the 460 more than i have.i think he started with a 460/2.38:1 then has moved on to a 514. he could lead ya too. i know he have me a little advice.
