Believe it or not.....back in like 75 my Dad and I witnessed an Indian walking out of area 3 with a chain of fish on his waist. He had been out for a couple of days on FOOT. Imagine trying to walk in that muck today.

From Okeechobbe South the Mismanaged water group otherwise known as SFWMD and Army Corp of (and I use the world loosely)engineers, have had their fair share of time to get it right. In a way I hope they fail to meet the deadlines imposed on them so Big brother can put them on lockdown. Just yesterday a sign on the indian reservation warned people to not Fish along the snake road because they were spraying a harsh chemical to kill the weeds. That should be good for the water and trees flowing south.

THANKS OLF ART , YA RICH I REMEMBER THE MERCY KILLS , HERES A PIC FROM THEN.. I REMEMBER THERE FOR AWHILE THE HUNTERS WERE ON PINS AND NEEDLES TO SEE IF THEY WOULD EVEN HAVE A HUNTIN SEASON IN THE GLADES OR NOT BECAUSE OF HIGH WATER , HELL I DONT GOTTA TELL YOU GUY'S YOU LIVE DOWN THERE , ALMOST EVERY OTHER YEAR ITS A TOSS UP IF THELL OPEN UP HUNTIN SEASON ON TIME OR NOT... I WAS JUST DOWN IN HOLYLANDS RIDIN A FEW MONTHS AGO AND I WAS TALKING TO A GAME OFFICER ABOUT THE SCRUB AND OVER GROWTH OF UNWANTED FROM BEING DRY FOR SO MANY YEARS WHEN I WAS A YOUNG KID RIDING ON THE AIRBOAT WITH MY UNCLE IT SEEMED TO ME THERE WAS A LOT MORE SAWGRASS AND MYRTEL STRANDS IN HOLYLANDS IT WAS NO WAY NEAR AS THICK AND DRY AS IT IS NOW, THEY CANT FIND A BALANCE ITS EITHER A DESERT OR NECK DEEP.. I USED TO LIVE RIGHT BY A MAJOR PUMP STATION, I SWEAR ONE DAY THEY WOULD PUMP SOUTH AND THE VERY NEXT DAY NORTH.. I REALLY WONDER IF THEM IDIOTS JUST FLIP A COIN EVERY MORING !!!

I say shut off the pump stations open the locks in the glades and on the kiss river let mother nature fix it her way.

A ''mercy kill'' to thin out a herd of sick Everglades deer was halted at dusk today, far short of its goal. Game officials said starvation and disease had already taken a ''catastrophic'' toll and hunters had had difficulty tracking down remaining deer.
An effort by conservationists to capture and transfer some deer ended after noon today, with only 19 deer caught in two days. Some 500 hunters showed up today in the south portion of the 750,000-acre conservation area where the hunt was held. On Sunday, 1,000 hunters in 628 boats killed 581 deer. Today, 139 deer were killed.
The hunt was originally scheduled for four days to kill off 2,200 of the 5,500 deer estimated to be in the area.

I am forwarding 1965 through 1995 water table history recorded in conservation Area 2 and 3. In reviewing the water tables in Area 2 to see what killed off the wildlife and destroyed all the islands. It is very apparent that depth of water over 15 inches was the normal procedures. The restudy teams approval of 30 inches is quite evident that it will completely destroy the wildlife and hammocks throughout Area 3, the same as it did in Area 2.
In 1966 I met with the chief hydrologist, Mr. Miller, of The South Florida Flood Control, he advised that there was not to be any water height within Area 3 that would exceed 18 inches. These regulations not to exceed 18 inches were set forth in its original design. The wildlife and the ecosystem were not to be HARMED. This 18 inch depth set forth has been completely over looked with a complete disregard to its destruction of one of the worlds natural wonders.
The Army Corps of Engineers activities of The Everglades area has killed off Area 2. Apparently this is no concern to them to this date. The approval of 30 inches in Area 3 will completely devastate and destroy The Everglades north of Highway 41. 30 Inches would destroy the Hammocks not create them. This procedure of ignoring what history has proven in Area 2 is down right frightening to me that our own government could go forth with such a plan. I am sure the American Citizens throughout America would be outraged as I am.
I am forwarding copies of Hydrographs of water levels on Area 2 and 3 with my drawings of destruction water depth and dates from 1965 to 1995, and hope that we will not let history repeat itself. There has been much discussion on the history concerning water levels and the making of hammocks and islands. Some reports advise that the water table in The Everglades was as much as 4.5 feet. Review the hydrograph 2A-17 central portion of WCA-2A. The islands were desÂÂÂtroyed of water depth well under 30 inches or over 18 inches.
The Everglades as I knew it was a wonderful nursery for all migrating bird life from other parts of the world, such as Canada and South America. It was nature working at its greatest efficiency and beauty. I know because I was there to witness the worlds natural wonder working at its peak. It was a glorious sight to see. I was there you should have been.

Folks, we're all taking the term Water Management to mean that the government is trying in some feeble way to RESTORE things in the Glades to levels where they should be. Open your eyes, please.
Water Management in 2006 terms means trying to find the water so that all the toilets will flush for the 1600 people a day who are moving here.
It's not pretty, but it's the truth.

this is one of the reasons I joined up. Before moving to north fla. I grew up in lee, charlotte, Glades and Okee counties. Still have some family there. Visited Fort Lauderdale area a few weeks ago and Ft Myers area a few months back. It really made me sad what's happened to our state. Now that I have grandkids it really bothers me that the heritage I grew up with may be gone by the time they have kids. I don't know about anybody else but I'd rather share a good day in the marsh with my kids showing them about nature, than spending scads of money and wasting time at Mickey's.

They riase money from membership drives & shotgun raffles.
Newton Cook & other's have a great rapport with the SFWMD & the Corp on water issues & hunting rights in South Florida.
