We use peltor lite 5 channel wireless head sets. We love them. The freedom of wireless is great. How ever at WOT communication is not possible. Don't know if wired headset would be any different because I nerver owned any.

I was just thinking that we use these cheap little hand held's for skiing in the mountains and they have a range of about 3 or 4 miles. I think they are fm and have female plugs for mic and headseat. numerous channels. Used the same set of alkalines for about three years now. Well I was thinking some adaptor cables from my David clarkes and the whole group of boats could hear the discussion, or move to another channel and just chat to a more select group. Plugs are 1/8" but the radios were only about $25.00 each about 4 years ago so like Radio shack, circuit city, wall mart? they work great!

and if peltor is using what we use in our band, 300' is pushing it, and thats ok on a 12' boat!

I own a Airboat Tour Company here in Nebraska and would like to offer something nice for my good clients.

Looking for something that works, I dont want to pioneer this. I just want to hear from other airboaters out there what there thoughts are.

Wireless or with Wires, I would like to hold a conversation going down the river. And want to find the best product out there.

Thought 's are coming to slow. I guess the big thing is first you need ear defender type head sets with boom mikes. I have not shopped for this stuff latley so I dont know if someone has a set with antenna and transmitter and receiver built into the head set. Stuff for the band is belt pack, burns a 9 volt alkaline in 6 hours, still needs a common receiver and transmitter to comunicate with, and is really expensive. I just checked peltors site and a head set with cable conect to this little, I guess lunch bag sized receiver, transmitter goes for $550.00 us each. I think a head set that you should be able to get new for $100.00 to $150.00, 2 1/4" female to 1/8" male adaptor cables and a $20.00 fm radio for each person would work really nice. 8)

For an on boat situation, the David clark wired stuff we use at work has never had a failure, each plugin point has a volume control, push to talk switch on head set. runs on boat electrical supply! 8)

WOT means wide open throttle. And distance on our head sets are 1/4 mile. They are pricey but would go with hand signals before I would be tied to a cable. IMOO IN MY OWN OPINION hehehe.

We have older model peltor lite 5 channel. If you've been to the web site its the type that has battery pack that clips to your belt. Don't get me wrong wired units would work fine if your just crusing around. We use our boat for hunting and also water rescue and we need the freedom of wireless. If you want to experiment you could try mounting some PTT HEADSET from two way radio inside earmuffs that would work. PTT means PUSH TO TALK. Voice acctuated head set would not work because of prop noise. Even our Peltors are hard to adjust to use as voice actuated because of the wide range of noise level from idle to WOT.
Most of the time I just leave my unit on PTT.

Tim, there's a company called Aircraft Spruce with a great selection of headsets, both wired and wireless. Check out their website.
Like most things, you're gonna pay for quality but they've got it all. Great folks to deal with too.

Another company you can look at is Fire Comm, we have been using them at work for several years now and had no problems. I believe they may be a little cheaper than the David Clarks plus they have nice weather tight connections (designed for the fire service). I have aquired a set and will be putting them on my boat and will post any info.

Google search for Fire Comm doesn't come up with them, do they have a parent company maybe or a different web link?
