header studs

One of the header studs on my angle valve 0480 jug ( the one you can see inside the exhaust port) is stripped. It is the only jug that has coarse thread studs all the others have fine thread studs. Can i put a helicoil in it? Any other fixes anyone can think of?

If you r good, and careful, you can drill the stud out.

You gotta git centered real well, and start with a small drill, and work your way up from there.

Drill the stud with progressively larger bits, till there's just a thin shell of it left in the threaded hole.
Then go in with a tap, carefully, and break-out the thin remains of the stud.

It ain't easy, but it can be done.
Don't ask how I know.
 
the stud isn't stuck in the hole its just stripped. I'll take it to a welder friend of mine and see if he thinks he can weld it up and then i will tap the hole. thanks for your input guys.
 
I was chasing the holes for the valve cover screws today and broke a tap......Yes I was working on Sunday. I got it out but I had to get creative. Let me get it straight The stud comes out,is not broken or stripped, but the threads in the cylinder are gone. Is that correct? The exhaust studs are avaliable in P.001, p.003, p.006,p.009 and p.012 I think. The problem is that who has on oversize tap. Standard studs are .001 over on the end that goes in the cylinder. Due to the fact aluminum expands when hot and studs get loose. If your threads are gone in the cylinder then an oversize stud will do you no good. The other problem you have is it is the inside stud. There is not much extra material there. I would just put a Helicoil if you have enough aluminum. If not you would have to weld and retap the hole. It is a real pain with the cylinder on the motor, plus the heat from welding and the shavings from grinding go to the valve.. If you do attempt to weld it on the motor be sure the exhaust valve is CLOSED. Like I said the easiest fix is a Helicoil,but only if your have enough material.
 
The cylinders were just redone by Don George maybe the mechanic just missed it. Mike your right there is not much material there it almost looks to have a slight crack in the aluminum. the stud that is in the holes on this cylinder are coarse thread while all the rest are fine thread, don't know if that helps you ID the Stud? I was thinking if I welded it up inside the exhaust opening maybe it will hold and stop the stud from going in so deep( when you get to the smooth shank of the stud it almost keeps going up so you cant get a washer and nut on it.
 
Then I would probably an oversize stud in it if you still have threads in the cylinder. The oversize stud will screw in and hold tighter and not run in so deep because it will be tighter.
 
where is the best place to get an oversized exhaust stud? aircraft spruce /certified engines unlimited (CEU) at opalocka General airport. :?:
 
Call or go to Certified Engines and tell Allen what you need. He is a stocking distributor for Superior Air Parts..if you need it, he has it. I will PM you his number.
