Hearing Protection???

i know you guys have quiet boats, but why do i hardly see pics of yall wearing hearing protection? i see pics of people running auto engines and the kids in the boat don't even have on ear muffs. even though they might be quiet, airboat noise will still damage your ears.....

i have a car motorboat and a aircraft boat i can talk to wife on the car boat.on my airplane boat i cant hear my self think. when wax starts shaking its time for the muffs.

I've run airboats most of my adult life and the only time I ever used such was out there in La and Tx running them big Seismic work boats.

I got a lota years running overall and I never seen a need for such. I have thought of combining an intercom with noise canceling headsets and the radios though.

Just something else to have to have around. I guess not many folks wear hearing protectors when they are out hunting either, but muzzle blasts can damage hearing as well, and in a single instance too not cumulative like in airboats.

Guess its a personal thing. Some does, some don't. Not much of a an issue with me who does and who don't.

WHY WOULD I NEED HEARING PROTECTION.MY HEARING IS JUST FINE!!!(all caps=shouting)

I always use hearing protection when running. When Idleing around I will take them off because they are uncomfortable but I respect my hearing and am worried about long term problems.

I hate wearing them, but I do it when I sit in the back seat closer to the prop.
My kidalways wears his no matter what.

I never leave the hill without my hearing protection. I use those small foam ear plugs. If I don't wear them my ears ring for hours afterwards. Plus I noticed early on in my airboating that most of the old timer airboaters I met were all deaf as a post and none of them ever wore any kind of hearing protection. So rather than go deaf and have to shop for one of those ear horns like Paw Kettle used I figured I would just stick with the ear plugs.

I got so comforatable wearing them around the airport I use them for mowing the lawn, tablesaw, router and grinder sessions and there a pairs for the kid's too. Not on when we go out on the ski boat or have 106 db band practices! I try to minimize!

Don't need them on my boat most lawnmowers and kids trucks passing me on the road are louder than my boat. Oh yeah don't forget the thumper stereos on the roads. My ears never ring and I have them usually available for passengers but most never bother once they hear it run. I lean down and talk to them while driving the boat.

me too,

one time before Sensenich...too many people not enough protection to go around. Guess who went without?????

Ringing for 2 days, plus like BPS said Navy engine room for years didn't help either :confused2:

a lot of the old timers fall asleep pretty easy, because they can't hear shat.
Use them all the time, and hate it when I don't, ears ring for days.

If we are running hard then I ware them for two reasons one the hearing protection and the other is to hold my HAT on.. So I don' t get my bald spot---- sun burned.---- NOTHIN WORSE THAN A BUNED BALD SPOT ON TOP OF YOUR HEAD.

I wish someone would start a poll on Muffs, I have tried a bunch, after a few months in the damp boat they go in the trash, I will not ride without them, even have a pair for the dog. I just ordered 3 pair from Grainger (pelter deluxe). They rate them at 29db but that might be hype. I have a set of noise cancelling military grade, they are really not worth the batterys. Anyone have a favorite? The money for the added ear life is money well spent..

Well, I started shooting at age four, went into the military, then law enforcement and then airboats. The ladies that run the audiometer every year love me so much, they keep asking me to come back! Apparently they can't believe how bad it's gotten.

Do yourself a favor and wear something. There's always hope, but I can't stand the thought of wearing hearing aides later in life.

As for my favorite, the foamies work better than most, don't bear down on your head and are very inexpensive.

If a guy was to put plugs in, and wear some type of headset, you can't hear a dam thing when riding. I used to do that, but it's a pain in the arse. Plus you can't hear the beautiful sound an airboat creates.

Double hearing protection above 90db. is a good idea. Children that ride with me, always have to have hearing protection on. Adults have a choice.

Kinda hard to hear another boat approaching with all that on though. Especially now that they got us muffled down.

I guess thats what a flag is for now. I still have trouble seein a flag coming at me form the stern and stern quarters.

Interesting notions though.
