how much hp does the 0720 have?

They're ground power units, usually made to run pumps and such.

Mega $ to get real power from them as you have an extra 2 pistons, jugs etc

They are neat though

Dwarf ...... Jim and I must have been typing at the same time.

Very cool engines, DuckLuv. If and when we resurrect the antique airboat idea, the 0720 just might be the way to go with it. Designed to turn a propeller from the drawing board, and could be awesome looking.

Stock they are rated at 400hp. I know of some people that have tried hopping them up but that motor seems to have an appetite for cranks when modified. But even 400hp on a 600lb. direct drive motor don't sound too bad, does it??????

Yeah, thats one bad powerplant. Gotta love that man.

I had the pleasure of parking my boat next to that one at the West Palm Show. What a Ride. If you can take your eyes of the motor check out the seats.

Aces ... I ain't NEVER wanted seats more than those. Way cool.

400 Lycoming HP works for me.

Really hard to get internal parts for them. Or so I was told.

But it is bad to the bone. Have only seen it on airplanes in person, but I can dream and drool.

The 0-720 is a site 4 sure. Its big, makes over 700 ft pounds of torque.
This motor is about 480 hp+ Craig will sell you the boat, he had it the airboat trader. He was asking 35k. I have his number if your interested, if the Indian hasnt bought it yet.

I have found that in most aircraft applications the strongest more impressive aircraft motors like the 180’s or 540’s max out in stock form around ½ HP per cubic inch. You must however consider the bigger a motor becomes the less efficient it is. So I would guess in stock form a 720 cubic inch motor is rated around 360HP. Are there any aircraft guy’s on this site who know. I’m sure Rick can find us some factory info on these motors.

Impressive 375HP and 400HP that's .55HP per cubic inch! I went to the Lycoming web site to find what their rated at.

Mike Thurman built the motor, 12.5 to 1 forged pistons. dynamic balanced, lycom port, and cylinder balance with mutl angle valve job, Airflow Performance direct port fuel injection, crank trigger ignition with 8 coils.....etc....The Lycoming power rating is 400hp with the hemi cylinders at 9 to 1 c/r with a carb.
Like the rudders say

Blowin money

I'm sure after all those mod's it's allot nastier than stock. Hell I'm impressed that an air-cooled motor is running 12.5 to 1 compression. I wonder what kind of cylinder pressure it has.

Yeah, it says he does have a nitrous system on it, and the article claims 500 HP

I bet he has got a big cam in it to bleed off the cylinder pressure

MM Pat, Thunder ain't never gonna convert. He's a good ol' feller, but when it comes to airboat engines he could be accused of having a bad case of 'tunnel vision' .... !

Hey guy’s I was converted. I started with a 125 Lycoming then had a 180 then a few 220’s. I got tired of pulling on my boats or getting stuck or struggling to run dry with three people in my boat. Everything has it’s purpose think about it when was the last time you saw a 18ft tour boat with a O540 on it. I never have and I’m sure it wouldn’t run well either. When I’m old and bored I will build another aircraft boat so I will have something to work on HE-HE.
