How to cape an Otter???

blackpowderscout

Well-known member
I found a fresh roadkill otter this morning and need to know how to cape it out for a mount. Do I go straight down the back and treat it like a deer or is there a special ottoer technique??

are Otters leagal to have in Florida? because if they are a protected Animal
you can not have them in your possesion no matter if they were killed on the road or not here in Georgia thats the way the law is especially with birds of prey but if otters are leagal in Florida you would skin him out from the under side down the belly a out onto the underside of his legs

It is legal to take both Otter and Bobcat on the upper St. John's during small game season which runs from Jan.22 thru March 1st but it also says you can start to take them during general gun season starting on Dec. 1st.

Thanks Rick

I was not sure on the Regs for florida and did not want to see anyone get in truble

I'll talk with the local FWC guys and see if I can't get the ok. It says you have to have some sort of approval if it's before Dec. 1st.

Adam, Cut from the palm of each hand up the inside of each leg
front and back, then straight down the belly to connect these
two vee shaped cuts ( >-< ) don't try to skin out the hands and
feet cut it off at the ankle or wrist, Split the tail about half way
from the anus to the tip on the bottem then very carefully peel
the carcus out of the hide turning the tail insideout as you go
slow and easy making small cuts as you go. as for the head, cut
straight up from between the front legs to the center of the
lower jaw about an inch from the bottem lip. At this time every
thing should be skined but the head. start pealing the hide over
the head being carefull not to rip thehide when you get to the ears
cut them off below the hide then trim around the eyes and right
down to the mouth cutting the hide loose between the lips and the
gums. Almost forgot the nose, when you get to where the hair
stops, cut the nose off under the skin.
Much better to leave the hands, feet, nose, and ears for the
Taxidermist ( he wont mind ) than to slip and mess up your
hide. Kevin.

Adam,

Ask you taxidermist I did taxidermy for 14 years before I moved here to Alaska and started another venture , But myself being a taxidermist I liked customers to bring them in whole , The reason all the small game animals I did . I only made one cut and that was down the dorsal (backbone) From the neck to the base of the tail. Makes my life easier less sewing when it is tanned , I also do my bears the same way. If you put it up in the freezer roll it nose to tail .

Back in the day, Otter, Bobcats, and coons made a good portion of my income. The coons we sold whole for there was a market for the meat also, but the cats and otters we had to skin. One day a guy that my wife
babysat for came by to pick up his kids as I was skinning an otter
and was suprised to see me throw the carcas in the back of my truck
to be hauled off to the woods. He asked ( em er thangs good ta eat)
to which I replyed iontno well he took it home with him to find out
Saw him a few days later, and he asured me that otters was not put on this earth to be eat. Hadent thought about that in a long time till
this poped up here. PS that ol boy was killed when the harber cay
condo colasped on Cocoa Beach don't remember the year.
PS #2 He said it took two weeks to get that smell outa the trailer

K-mac, that was March 29th 1981. Who was your friend? I was there that morning, doing some measurments for my job. I had left and was then on my way to Thomasville Georgia to pick up some equipment. Heard about colapse on radio while driving. It was a sad weekend. I always remember because the following day President Reagan was shot.
