How to patch a hole in UHMW?

JD

Well-known member
I just ran over a pipe that had been driven into the ground and after the frogging trip found that it had cut a pretty little hole about an inch and a half in the center of the boat. Any ideas or secret tricks to fix this . Has anyone tried the UHMW glue that I read something about on here awhile back. Or do you think I could patch it with fiberglass? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks JD Oh, I forgot...We caught 26 Nice ones!!!

never heard of patching polymere but I have repaired it in the past

do not use fiberglass it will not work very few things stick to polymere

just cut out a 4x4 square where the hole is and then put a new 4x4 piece of polymere where the damaged peice was keep the rivits about 1 inch apart on all the edges and make sure it is a tight fit if there is any sharp edges grind them off

I have heard it is possible to weld polymer with a special kit

You might try a plastic welder I use it alot in my business ,I works great on atvs ,Argos, Snowmachines But I have not tried it on polymer yet.

Here is a link to The one I have ,I bought mine off ebay For $100 but here is a link to the company

Also for those interested, We might be behind in times up here in Alaska but the Polymer guy in town said they have a new way of installing polymer without drilling holes in the boat. If your boat is not fiberglass , It looks like a giant flat head tack
If I understood him correctly you pre drill holes in poly then place on boat and hit it with the welder. Its new up here but might be used widely down there,Just thought I'd throw that out here.

that trick of drilling the holes and then wielding don't sound to safe.plus it doesn't sound like u can't get or keep it tight!!!!!i put rivets on 4by4 square.that keeps it tight in all conditions ,hot or cold.the flatter the polymer the freer the boat.
