Hull build pics the oldschool way

southern safaris

Well-known member
I thought i would post up a few pics of a hull coming up after some discussion on a different thread , just for fun maybe those trying it for the first time can gain something from it or if nothing else im sure ill get some well needed criticism lol , there has been some really great build threads on this site it would be nice if somehow we could get them all in one place , i highly encourage folks to build for themselves thats how this all started, from people that broke the mold and put their ideas on the groumd and ran with it , my hats off to all the oldtimers and new upcoming builders and how far airboating has come , please feel free to post up your own build pics ideas :thumbleft:

southern safari you build a nice boat! I don't know if you seen my build but it is similar to yours :thumbleft: :salute: :old_glory:
C61066FB-DD23-447B-BD66-FB8190653E7D-800x600.jpeg

:salute: I followed your build the whole way through, you did an excellent job on that boat !! I especially took note of your riveting and i have to say for someone that does it everyday im impressed with your craftsmanship , nowadays people want quick and cheap and i rarely get to build a riveted boat anymore , most have no idea what it takes to pull that off and it look that nice , :thumbleft: one day ill get back down south and ill give yall a shout ,,, been almost 6 years since ive been out in the glades and its killin me!

southern safari thanks for the good words!! Let me know when you can make it down :salute:

Did you just tack weld the stringers or did you go back a run a full weld on each side? If you only tacked it is that enough? Asking because I’m think about building one similar?

On my t-bars i run 3" welds spaced 12" apart and staggered on the otherside so basically every 6" there is a weld from one side to the other and this gives good strength and durability and as your welding from one side to the other it keeps the cooling and shrink of the aluminum under control, ill be welding in some t bars tomorrow in a new hull so ill try to shoot some close ups to explain a little better

Sorry for not posting those pics sooner , i got held up with my daughters doc appointments yesterday so i stole this pic from someone else on the site to kinda explain the procedure, i just make my welds a little longer than theres but everyones preference is different.. ill post more of the next hull as its coming up in more detail as i can

Thanks Rich, i try and keep it simple .... im not the best hull builder out there by any means nor would i ever claim it after seeing how many really nice boats come out of others backyards , garages, carports and "ol ladys washrooms" as i believe another boy said on here few years back ..... and not everyone needs a 80k boat either (not knocking the big boy shops) i have some good friends that build some amazing boats out there but.... sometimes a good simple hunt boat is all you need

yup i'm happy for anyone who is making good money in this industry, but boy has it changed quicker than my income has grown!
