I need more help with my pitch problem

I've let my boat set idle for several months since the last time I ask for help. But now I need to get the thing up and running. Is there a formula that will help me to decide on the correct pitch for my motor. Would dropping 10" of pitch make a big difference on load and speed. I'm running a 56x38 arrow prop now and it stalls my motor at 2700 rpm before I can get on plane. I know this isn't enough information for anyone to be of any real help, but let me know what info is needed and I'll supply what I can. Thanks Glenn

Will need to know engine, hull size, and where is it stalling out, on trailer, running wide open, ect.

Chuck, my engine is a geo tracker 1.6 liter 4 banger, aluminum block and head. It's supposrd to make 80 hp max, but thats at 5000 rpm. My boat is a Polar craft jon boat 16' long and 4' in the bottom. The engine stall at 2700 rpm whether in water or on the trailer. I'm convinced the pitch is just too much for this engine, as it stalls well below the optimum rpm for this prop. Arrow prop sold this prop for the Suzuki 3 cyl engine, and told me I only needed 55-60 hp to spin it at 3400 rpm, which is the maximum recomended operating range for this prop. There was no mention of running a reduction unit then or now. What I can't seem to find is how much pitch reduction would I need and would it actually help me at all. I don't want to make any radical changes as I can ride and fish for hours on the Tallapoosa river on just a few gallons of gas, and at my income level that's very important. Several years ago I contacted a company called Bears& Hercics or something like that out of Oregon and told the owner what I was building and he sent me the perfect prop for the job. He had a page on the net about different prop aplications and he stated that unless you were sure that your boat would do more than 40 mph, there was nothing to be gained from a pitch greater than 24". Unfortunately I can no longer contact him as he passed away 3 or 4 years ago. I know that gear reduction would likely solve my rpm problems but at the cost of more weight, and with my narrow hull I don't need any more of that. Thanks in advance Glenn
