Heads up.....SFWMD will attend the KRVSA meeting in Bartow at the Civic Center at 7 pm. on Sept. 07. They will discuss their plans for "beginning to control airboat access, hunting pressure and take" around the Lake Kissimmee / Hatchineha / Gardners wetlands system. Hidden within this is the location of "No Airboat" signs and boundaries.
There was an informational meeting yesterday on the shores of Lake Hatchineha with Osceola and KRVSA club leadership and SFWMD representatives. Maps were revealed that showed some expansion of small game hunting from the Kiss St. Park to Shady Oaks - and the elimination of deer and turkey hunting along that corridor.
Much of this is a direct result of the decline in deer populations in the area associated with the ten day antlerless deer harvest period and the explosion of run and gun airboat hunting during that period.
We questioned the location of the "No Airboats" signs and where they were to be located. We are demanding the signs be located behind the lake berm so there is no question that a shady rest stop, camp site or picnic under the oaks is completely legal. There is resistance to that from SFWMD.
Also, there is one map that shows the lake shoreline marsh from Overstreet to the entrance to Gardners as "closed" to airboats. SFWMD was reminded about KRVSA vs. McNamara and the resulting decision that established public access to sovereign submerged lands at 54'5".
SFWMD showed great concern for the adjoining landowners and the possible costs associated with them having to install new fencing to separate their lands from ours.......go figure.
This one will probably get sticky. Ya'll come and bring your check books.
