Info about 220 GPU

Cajun

Is there a certain brand of oil others perfer over another? I have been using the Castrol brand, just curious about others opinions of brand and weight. I need to get a manual to know when and what to do for it, any idea where to get one? Its a 220 GPU . Need to know the plug gap also. Is there any other pointers I should know about it? I've just been running it and not needing to do anything but the day will come. Thanx Cajun

Cajun, I'd recommend the following: (1) use Aeroshell 100 (50W) oil; (2) use Autolite 386 spark plugs at .018; and (3) use Moroso Blue Max solid core ignition cable (spark plug wires), 8mm if you can deal with fittin' them through the mag cap.

I have the overhaul manual, and am not too impressed. While it has a lot of good information, I don't think it's worth the money Ducarra wants for it. I've never seen the operator's manual, maybe it's better.

I've been running 30w Castrol but maybe I'll get this Aeroshell 100. I just want to take the best care possible. Can you give me an idea how much oil it holds, so when I change it I can check this universal dipstick against it. Thanx for all the help. Later

Doc's got it right. Follow his advise. There is a difference in oil properties, (the additives and "responsibilities" of the oil). Air cooled motors Need oil for aircooled engines. Most 220 gpu's hold about 9-10 qts ON THE DIPSTICK ATER FILLING THE OILCOOLER. Depending on plumbing and cooler size, yours may take as much as 12 qts as my previous motor did.
Make sure you clean the screen type filter in the front of the engine, some guys dont even know its there.

hey cajun,
Doc is right (as usual)lol . You DO WANT to use the shell aero 100
mine took 12 quarts after all was said and done.If you can find the right mineral oil you can use it but it is costly. All the old timers I know use it (shell 100)and nothing esle.Thats what 90% of the guys use in their motors.

I really do appreciate ya'lls time giving me this info. Wheres the best place to find this Aeroshell 100 ? I have a problem that I might go ahead and try to do something about. Its been leaking oil ( I think around tubes ) and smoking alittle, I did a compression check a while back and it seems I remember it had 115 lbs. plus or minus on all 6 cylinders, so I was gonna try and do a leak down check to determine which ones might be having the problem. I live near Brooksville do any of ya'll know someone thats good on these GPU's that might want to look at it and make some side $$$$ ? I'll haul it to them. Motor runs great thats why I haven't done anything but after today and wiping the oil off of rudders, I think I'll try to get someone to try and help me replace the cylinder(s) that might be in trouble. Thanx again for all the help.

Cajun, I live in Inverness, and I don't mind taking a look at what you've got. GPU's are a great motor, I just sold mine (went to a 520). They are easy to work on. My schedule is crazy this week but PM me with your number and I'll get back with you.

Cajun, I buy Aeroshell 100 at Sam's Club. Usually around $32 a case. Regarding your compression, I see about 120 on a good cylinder. I'm also having problems with oil loss via the bypass tube. I replaced one cylinder (it's compression was down around 60) and think I've two more to go. Replacing the one cylinder cut my oil loss in half, but I still lose/burn a couple of quarts on a 30 mile ride.

Cajun.

A few of us are going to run Floral City this am. We will end up at the Sleepy Hollow eating & refreshment emporium. Swampjet, A1 and me. If you want to join us, I'll be headed up 41 in about an hour. 158*31*37658 / 813/927/3474

From what I hear from guys in the aviation world, it is somewhat normal for a continental to use a lot of oil. I have a 0-470 that uses about a quart every 2 or 3 hours or so. I'm not sure if you could really eradicate the oil loss completely. I may be wrong though.

It is possible to not use a lot of oil in a cont. But it must be built to exact tollerances. My dad had a GPU that used about a qt. a month! and did not leak or even seep oil. But that motor was built by Dick Hoffmann. That motor is still running around citrus county and still doesn't use oil.
