Interesting combo

My brother picked up a 340.a lyc. used and locked up. never heard of one before then. Notice that it had the big bolts in the crank so i was not sure what was up? Got it over to lacy'es and tore down. It has 180 crank and rods with cut down blower pistons on 340 jugs. everything has been fully balance! All that it needs is 3 jugs and rings and bearings. He said it will be hard on starters and is a avgas only motor. It's supposed to be at least 200hp? Anyone seen this combo run? The 340 sump has smaller intake runners so that may hurt it on top. My brother is looking for a 180 sump and a good calling for it. All he has for a prop s a wirl wind 72in that came off a ground power?

He is really excited about it. Going on a flat bottom square nose jimmy white.I think he needs a shorter prop but we will see? Supposed to be running by new years.

I have a set of 0-340 170hp fresh chrome intake pipes. They are the large diameter pipe that tapers down at the end to fit the small diameter sump. Kind of a weird looking pipe. Probably won't help you though if you are looking for the large diameter sump that fits the Wide Deck 320 or 0-360 180hp. Just thought I would let you know.

I will call him and ask. pm me a price. are the 340's rare or am i just in the dark? What do you think this motor should make and do you think that the smaller intake runners are restrictive?

I don't know HOW restrictive they would be. They would have to be a little more than the large sump and tubes. BUT for some reason Lycoming seems to think they work best and they might know a little more about that motor than me.. The 0-340 is the only motor with that style pipes. Maybe not if you are trying to make a performer motor. But in stock form and with the stock pt.# carb it must work best.
