I was looking for some info on Panasoffkee and came across this letter at a web site that came upon a google search --- I sure hope officials don't take letters with info like this seriously - but you never can tell -- airboats raise cholesterol amongst other health problems

The Destination Florida Commission Discussion Submission

It is my understanding that The Destination Florida Commission’s basic mission is to entice and encourage retirees to locate in Florida. However, you have not first taken into consideration the serious problems that already exist that affect senior citizens who have already chosen Florida as their retirement location.

I am 71 years old and a single female. I have chosen Central Florida for my retirement residence. My property is zoned agricultural/residential and is located 1 mile from the Withlacoochee River.

At no time was it disclosed that the location would promote serious health problems due to the fact that it was 1 mile from the river and airboats would have rights above and beyond my rights to live on the property free from hazardous noise pollution as stipulated in the State Constitution and as Act of Congress. The knowledge that airboats would congregate in groups of from 15 to 40 on the river and would bombard me with horrendous sounds from engines that are from 700 to 1000 horsepower and props that rotate at mach speed followed by sound barrier explosions and high frequency whines that pierce the soul was not revealed to me at any time. In addition, disclosure was not made that these same airboats could traverse the river at any time of day or night for any length of time for not less than 8 but usually 18 hours emitting explosive blasting sounds with every start, turn or launch onto land or trailer.

As a result of this form of torment, my health has declined considerably. During airboat sessions on the river, my blood pressure elevates to 180/90 to 273/213. My allergies have increased in number. I have experienced asthma attacks, extremely high cholesterol, and anticipatory anxiety. I have been diagnosed as having traumatic stress due to airboat noise exposure and a heart attack or stroke waiting to happen.

All agencies have refused to apply their areas of jurisdiction or enforcement. EPA, DEP, Fish and Wildlife, Sumter County Sheriffs and Deputies, Elder Affairs and even the Governor’s Office have absolutely refused to acknowledge and enforce The Florida Constitution, Florida Statutes, or existing rules and regulations that apply to the horrendous noise created and emitted by airboats.

Every single agency has informed me that Florida is not a heaven for retirees who choose not to be herded into a development that is often severely controlled by boards and developers to the detriment of the citizens within. Each agency has informed me that airboats have rights to both the land and water and I do not and consequently must escape from the area to save my life. I have been told by all Florida agencies that I must join the group that has increased in size regularly, The Airboat Refugee Culture.
Resolving the serious airboat noise pollution problem must take precedence over any attempts to entice or encourage senior citizens to relocate and retire anywhere in the State of Florida.
 
If you think one little old lady like this cannot hurt you, remember that Madelyn O'Hare got prayer out of the schools. One person.

This little old lady problem needs to be addressed, like don't make noise where she can hear it, if she is still there.

If you go to the "about us" page, you'll see that it is founded by someone with the same last name as the lady who wrote that letter.

Notice that I didn't turn the web address into a link. Never make a link to a site that you don't like because it makes them rank higher with the search engines and increases their popularity.

One more thing, it's probably just a matter of time before this forum starts getting spammed by anti-airboaters. It happened on another airboat forum last year and got so bad the admininstrator shut the board down for awhile.
 
Hi, my husband lewt me read this letter. Such a joke. I did go to the web site and emailed them and said some nice things. I told her that dwelling on the noise is causing the trouble and I never knew that airboat noise caused high cholesterol. I might have to go get mine checked since my husband has an airboat. But I think she is causing all her troubles by herself. If she would not dwell on the noise and let it go she would eventually not hear it. I think she is making herself sick.
But again, you never know what will happen. People have to gripe about something all the time. I guess all the airplanes that go over my house, I am going to have to call and complain. Too much noise.
 
I have a rule in my business .... never work for little old ladies. This lady can do a lot of damage and obviously she is trying to. I hope she is not successful but this is where it all starts. Just think she lives a mile, by her statements, from the noise and still complains about it.

I would think the vibration from the noise would help her medical problems by keeping things flowing for her. It sounds like she might be all stopped up, as in full of sh_t, but she knows how to get attention to he rplight or imagined plight.
 
I just wanted you to read what was sent back to me. I emailed this person as was not rude and this is what they said.


Airboat sound is debilitating and negatively impacts plant,animal and human live and destroys river beds etc. There is absolutely no good use for these instruments of torture and torment other than riding in the lake of Fire. Banning these instrument of torture and torment is the only way to rid the world of a tool of Satan.

Just thought I would let you guys know. I did email them back but was nice about it and told them I would pray for them and their family.
 
CC - And that is just the type of people we don't need to worry about. They come off as nut cases. We just to have to make sure that we are always positive and polite with our responses.

And don't let them pass that B.S. about airboats damaging the environment. There is no prop damage to plants or animals, they cannot destroy river beds because there is little in the water that is going to tear up the bottom, especially when compared to a submerged propeller driven boat.

Several studies have shown that while there is some disturbance to wildlife, the overall impacts are minimal. The whoopers down around Aransas refuge basically ignore the airboats of the hunting guides unless they pass extremely close. If you are going to take these people on, stick to the facts, educate yourselfs and always be polite. Let them be the screaming nut jobs that make fools of themselves.
 
Way to go CC you done good. really. This one was a nut case and that probably explains why the people were not helping her. But we better pay attention cause a lot of them are not nut cases.

Wow is all I can say. I have been nothing but nice and did not say anything bad to this person. I was just stating my opinion, as she was. But this is crazy. She has no idea what type of person I am and who my husband is. I guess my husband as got me started with this because I am definately going to get a hold of my officials and try to take care of this.
Airboating is the only thing my husband enjoys and people like this try to take it away. Not if I can help it. You guys look out, this has motivated me to take it to the next level and fight for you guys.
 
We have a signal in Law Enforcement for folks like this we call them 24's
and it is for a mentaly Deranged or desterbed person and from what I read she seem to be one and a little ammo for the cause there is a Federal Law call the Noise Abaitment Act. and it was first intended to protect Airports but has been applied to other situations it basicly states
that if you take resadence into an area knowing that there is a noise situation you are null and void for any kind of legal action to be taken against that situation ie Airports,Gun ranges ect. my feelings are if these folks don't like the way we do things in the South may be they need to go back to where they came from.

I had a few too many frosty beverages the other night and got into an hour debate with a huge environmentalist (My brother in-law). After a long heated debate I won with one point. I told him anytime you go into the marsh on an airboat you are in the only place left that resembles the natural Florida because the marsh remains exactly as it was in 1950,1920,1850,1800 and so on. The real environmental damage comes from the huge influx of people (like himself) moving here plowing over the wet lands and building homes. Oh ya he lives on the water and filled in over an acre of wetlands to build his home. He just had to buy property some where else and give it to the county to offset his construction. Idiots like him complain about us hunters, fishers and air boaters destroying the environment. Where I air boat is the only naturally sustained public environment in Florida I told him the best way I could help the environment was to kick him in the ass with my size 13 and send him all the way back to Connecticut. He even agreed that I successfully enlightened him.

I'm sorry to tell you that the Noise Abaitment Act did not do much to protect the airports, airplanes, or the people who operated them.

Curfews were enacted (Washington National Airport).

Noise abatement climbs were required (steepest possible climb at the lowest possible airspeed).

Federal aircraft noise laws for aircraft actually eliminated some aircraft from the US fleet and required extremely expensive modifications to others which reduced their fuel economy and performance.

There is an old saying that goes around Wachington DC that briefly says that being right does necessarily mean that you are going to win.

I agree with Waterthunder too, and I'm glad that I got to see it for myself. However, we need to win this one.

I will be back out there shortly. For the first time in the last five years I have been working on my own boat. The German in me keeps making me redo what I have already done so I’m a little behind schedule. I’m really pushing things now because I’m tired of working 7 day’s a week and watching everybody else pick up their motors and go riding. My wife has threatened me with the couch if I don’t put her on an airboat soon. Plus I want too spend my weekends on the water with my family. Hey Sniper I’m sure we will meet on the river. I run up north around Oak head, Lake Winder, Wolf creek and Persimmons mound. However when my latest boat is done I want to travel to a different lake at least once a month I also want run south around Spade and Bulldozer more often. So I can get one last look at our home state before it’s gone.
 
Waterthunder when you get your boat done? we run with about 10 boats around here and you can ride with us any time you want we will be out at sarno in the morning rideing
 
yeesh! That letter from that old lady scares me! Come to think of it, rabid old women in general scare me. Near as I can tell that woman should move to Wyoming where pretty much the only noise heard is chirping prairie dogs.
Also maybe a diet of sage brush would help her cholusterol levels.
Really I think the problem stems from too many people living in too small an area. When you move into a new area and suddenly get exposed to something diffrent you just gotta figure, "well, I guess the hide comes with the hair".

It was unfortunate that I read your letter today for the first time. It disturbs me that you claim all your heath problems are due to airboat noise. In your letter you claimed to be 71 years of age, would you not agree that your medical conditions are consistent with other senor citizens your age? If this is not the case could you please provide us with some sound and legitimate evidence that your claims are true? Where did you live before moving to Florida?


PS: I am not even from Florida, but nonsense actions by uneducated people spread fast.

experience in the field!!! If you are an airboater-I would certainly

accommodated for this form of abuse just as a drug addict-of which you
can
be classified if you are an airboater and not supposedly negatively
effected
in the same manner that other normal people are--or an alcoholic which
you
are sure to become because one drug addiction leads to another. You

Oh well she just informed me about problems I didn't know I had. I am a drug addict, a soon to become alcoholic, and I probably smoke! She is way out there I must say. The sad part is that people like this are extremely dangerous, most of the have more money than time and will stop at nothing till they get what they want.

The um 71 year old saint has opened my eyes. I drink beer and smoke. No wonder I am attracted to airboats. I need help and didn't even know it. Perhaps I will get some therapy for my problem after I hit rock bottom and start watching reality shows on the tube.....

Until then I will stay in denial where it is comfortable.

I know in my heart Ms Dickenson will forgive our transgressions until we all see the error in our ways. She seems very flexible unless she is approached by an unrepentant soul who operates one of satans' chariots. :twisted: .
