IO520

One of the very finest aircraft engines ever built, and a near PERFECT powerplant for an aiirboat.

I have a couple of friends with 520's both used to be IO's but now have carbs for better reliability. They are very nice motors. Strong and durable. The fuel injection can be a little tricky if not setup properly but you'll get more HP out of it.

like em better than the 540's........seen em run faster than 540's..brother in law has one that is unbelievable,(Gary Barber) built it. Great engines IMO.
 
Great motors, lots of power. Does anyone have any info about the Continental IO 550. What is the weight comparison to the 520? HP comparison? I have seen Teague Aviation and JC Stanley advertising that they have both motors for sale for pretty reasonable prices.
 
I talked a friend of mine into purchasing a run out 520 from Jurnigan. It runs great a very strong motor. It's on the same exact boat as another friend but he has a 540 both are injected and the 520 kills it plus the 540 has blown up 2 or 3 times this year. Both hulls have the same rigging seating and hulls both boats were completely built by the same builder.
 
I have a 520 on a 13ft Rivermaster built by J.C. Stanley great motor very strong I/m in the process of putting a turbo on it now... :D
 
I have a Stanley motor and I havent seen a 540 with as much prop pitch in it as I can run.I'm running 72" 3 blade. And I'm still turning 2900. JC and Ben diffenetly have it going on.I couldn't be more happier.
 
I appreciate the input, I'm having one built and wanted to make sure I had made the right decision. The motor will be mounted on a 12' x 7'6" aluminum hull.
 
Tony i've got a 520 on a 12'6 by7'6 diamondback deck-over mine was injected but it's been converted to carb. i couldn't be happier it will go anywhere i want and run's dry with 3 adult's to answer your'e weight question there is not much difference in the 520 vs. the 550 the 550 is a longer stroke 520 but the same cyl. bore there are heavier than the 540 lyc. but make as miuch power and are a little cheaper to buy.
