Is 100 hp enough for a small dd boat?

JABO - That is a loaded question. But if the hull and stand set up is correct yes it is. It most likely will not run on the dirt or climb the hill, but once again that depends the entire setup.

Lots of early boats (if not most) ran with ground power units that were 90 HP and I know of a few that were 60 HP.

With a one man setup it might be a really fun rig.

Look at the mini airboat thread and the photos of in carol dixon's hulls. There are quite a few that are running with ultralight engines as well that are around 65 HP.

Good Luck

That is what gave me the idea. I saw some video of a small one man airboat running dry with a 65hp motor. However the motor looked a lot less than 135lbs. I belive it was built by mosquito air boats. Im really starting to think seriously about building something like it. thank you by the way. That does help

I’m with you JABO, if a 61 HP B&S powered airboat can run dry with one person, why can’t a 100 HP powered airboat with almost twice the HP run even better?

According to the B&S website the 35 HP model weighs 125 lbs. without the muffler. The 61 HP B&S is a modified 35 HP B&S so the weight should be close.

What make 100 HP engine are you using?

rebuilt 1.8 suzuki, now i just need to get the guy who builds them to tell me how he does it....it cant be that hard.

1996 1.8 Suzuki put out 114 foot lbs. of torque at 3500 RPM, Pretty decent. 9.8/1 compression. I don't know what year you have. HP was rated at 125 at 6500. I have been wondering about end thrust, Do the DD Caddy guys add an exterior bearing at the end of the crank to handle prop end thrust? Sweet engine but even nicer with reduction I bet!

I haven't seen an external bearing in person but I have been told about a person in Clewiston, FL that has installed external bearing at the front of the Cadillac engines.
