If you go with a 383 spend the extra money to upgrade to the roller version and make sure the engine does not run lean.
 
Well that's an open question but to date I don't think Jegs sell's White engines so it's still buyer beware, or buyer be warned!
There is no cheap version of anything that lasts and people still don't realize the cheap versions break when you need them the most!

There was some on here that had luck with the zz versions from GM, "not Jeg's specific" but a decent GM build. I still like mine built for 6k for 2 minutes. Those specs hold up real nice but not a cheap build.
 
What exactly are you looking for power wise and how much can you afford to spend? What prop do you plan to spin and do you have a gear drive ratio? As has been discussed on here in great detail an airboat engine needs to be purpose built to have longevity. Like Proto said some people have gotten by using the ZZ4 and based on the answers to the questions the SA family can offer up advice.

I have a 358 I built and never used, very good parts in it. 13-1 compression. Worked RHS vortec heads custom going can, crane rollers, titanium retainers and keepers. Should be at least 450 hp
 
I just budget built a 6.0 that is around that HP, I bought used and redid top end. I have a 2.68 with a 79" 3 bld R it is on a 14' Alumitec runs fairly well. It is certainly not purpose built, might blow-up tomorrow. Had a stock 5.3 that had 113K before it was on 2 different boats over 300hrs on 1 and 192hrs on mine, still running strong when it came off a month ago.

You can get LS2 Block from scoggins-dickey for 1200.00 and LSA forged crank for just over 400.00. Look at the the Scoggins web-site they have some good pricing.

That crank is almost $700 nowadays. The blue engines have been used on airboats but they don't live long. I know of 3 that died short of 50hrs.
