Judging Mud

With the low water I wish I could tell how slippery mud is. I’ll hit one mud spot and almost leave my seat before being able to barely power out. The next mud I come across, I’ll speed up to get an edge over crossing it, and that mud will be as slippery as snot. I wish I could tell more about mud by looking at it. I wonder if mud can be slick one day and glue the next, just because the water content changed a little. Does anyone have any tips or rules of thumb on this?
 
I avoid black mud like the plague. I just assume that it's gonna be sticky and hit it with everything I've got just to be on the safe side. That stuff can put a real damper on an otherwise great day of riding.

I knew a guy that got thrown out of his seat and broke his leg on the grass rake. If the trails are that low I'll just find somewhere else to ride.

I try to avoid it too. If I can't then I try to hit it hard and hold on!

White sand is bad, black mud is tough, and grey or blue clay is pure glue.

There is nothing better than local knowledge. Thats why we always try to get someone to lead a ride thats from that area.

It just takes time to learn all the bad spots in a area, nothing better than gettin out in it, words wont do it.

We all have gone through it sooner or later. Just remember what it looks like when it is slick or when it is glue.

my buddy got a new boat and we all assumed that he knew black meant stop, but then again, we all know what assuming will get ya. he had his new, very high maintenance girlfriend on the front of the boat and hit a patch of glue mud running wide open. needless to say, she got a free facial that day and he became single reeeeal quick.
 
i just go by the fact that if it looks like theres water in it, then it wont be too bad, but when u come accross that black/blue/grey stuff that is kinda cracking from being dry but still is a litle damp, it'll stop ya dead if ya aint careful... but like u said, it is hard to judge sometimes.... just gotta test it out in the places u ride i reckon...
 
My boat is set up weight forward because I run in deep water up here ..... if the engine suddenly dies I've got a better chance of not sinkin it that way when the backwash comes.

When I tried to run with the boys down at Orange last weekend though, it was set up all wrong for the black mud. When I hit that stuff it was like runnin into a wall.
 
I CAN RUN THE MUD AND THE STICKY GRASS ! BUT NOT THE WHITE SAND OR BEACH SAND ! I DONT GET STUCK BUT MY MILEAGE GOES DOWN DOUBLE ! GO FIGURE ! BUT I GOT A 16 FT KENNEDY SORT OF A POINT TO IT !
