Hey ya'll,

Don't quite sound like a 100% for sure thing but...we might have an airboat friendly park by August of next year here on the lake!

Commission to Vote on Lake Kissimmee Park

By Tom Palmer
The Ledger

BARTOW - Polk County officials are close to a deal that will lead to the development of a new county park on Lake Kissimmee.

"It's scheduled to go to the commission on May 9," said Don Wilson, Polk's director of leisure services.

The 142-acre park will be located near the site of a former Shady Oaks Fish Camp on the lake's southwestern shore.

The deal to develop the park involves the South Florida Water Management District in West Palm Beach.

County and water district officials met at the site in June to discuss development of the new park. The land is part of a 3,000-acre site SFWMD officials purchased for $18.5 million in 2004 as part of the Kissimmee River restoration project.

Although 34,498-acre Lake Kissimmee is the fourth-largest lake in Florida, public access has been reduced substantially because of a series of purchases that resulted in the closing of three fish camps.

The only county parks in that area of Polk County are a small park with a boat ramp, a campground on Lake Rosalie and a boat ramp park on Lake Walk-in-Water.

Wilson said under the agreement, SFWMD officials will pay for the design and construction of the park and Polk County will be responsible for maintaining it.

Initially, facilities are expected to be relatively simple, consisting of an airboat launching area, two conventional boat ramps and picnic shelters, said Fred Davis, SFWMD's director of land stewardship.

"We have $1 million budgeted," he said, adding the project will also include a new access road because the current access is on what is now private property.

Wilson, who wants to eventually expand the park's facilities, said he hopes to have the park open by August of next year.

edited to include the article as the link would ot work for me

How would an airboat launching area be set up? Would there be noise restrictions?
Just wondering. Anymore I always launch and crank my boat out of the water like all the other boats. This park sounds really cool if it happens.

When/where is it due for a vote in the county commission? May 9th the article said, but it did not sound firm.

Is this something we oughtta attend to support? I sure would not mind giving my part in a hearty round of applause at the moment of a good vote like that. Positive reinforcement for the commissioners. :)

And let them know there are airboaters listening and watching THEM.

Is Lakeland the county seat of Polk? or is it Bartow? Time of the meeting? Confirmed it's on the schedule?

Bowt,

There is already a pretty decent sized area there capable of dry-launching as well as a concrete ramp for wet-launching.

Mood,

Johnboy is correct, it's in Bartow. Hit the below link to go to the commissioners website, (yes, flood them with e-mails). Ya'll gonna be at the KRVSA meeting this Thursday night?

Not yet on the Commissioners agenda, (thier agenda is not yet published for the May 9th meeting at9 A.M.).

Thanks Jeff - Let's make sure this is followed thru with. Me and you if we have to, but I would definitely like to balance complaining about commissioners doing us wrong with praising them when they do us right!! It just seems the right thing to do.

as for the thursday meeting - I think the hospital work schedule is going to prevent us from making it - 4a.m. Friday comes really early and that makes it hard to stay out thurs night especially 90 minutes away from home.

But we are planning on being at Camp Mack EARLY to help Danny and crew with running the show. I helped last year get the sound system up and running (my old job) and we want to do what we can Saturday before we head on over to Lakeland for Easter with the parents.

hanks for the info and the link! See you Saturday! :)

Hey ya'll,

Very important to airboaters this property is! The KRVSA with Branco, Big Daddy and others have fought very hard for this, http://www.southernairboat.com/phpBB2/v ... shady+oaks

Please use the above link to e-mail or write these commissioners for us all. I'll try to post more info on the commissioners agenda for the May 9th meeting as it gets closer. A truly beautiful place that airboaters deserve on Lake Kissimmee.

Hey ya'll,

Please flood these commissioners with a short e-mail. I already got a response from two of them with positive comments about this. Any e-mail to a commissioner don't have to be as complicated as "rocket-science" Just counts and helps us to do it!

Dear Sirs, I am a Polk County resident and an airboater. Please provide the "yea" on May 9th to make the wonderful old "Shady Oaks" campground into an "airboat friendly" facility. Thank you, Jeffery L. Patterson

and my response was...

Mr. Patterson:

I don’t foresee any problems with the Board approving the Shady Oaks plan for an air boat ramp and park. Thanks for being involved.

Bob English,

To me, any e-mail and reply is better than none. Initial e-mail from Mr. Wilkinson was that he was "out-of-office" enjoying 4-wheeling. We already have a curfew here, please help with a short e-mail to get us an airboat friendly campground.

Here's their e-mail links again...

Hey ya'll,

Just a reminder that the Shady Oaks Park comes before the Polk County Commissioners next week for the vote, (May 9th). WE REALLY NEED THIS PARK!!!

Please use the above link to e-mail all the commissioners requesting thier approval for this airboat friendly park in Polk County!

Commissioners Bob English and Randy Wilkenson both seem like they are for the park from my e-mail responses. Where do the others stand on the vote?

The KRVSA and others have fought hard to make sure that this piece of property will not become a "condo commando's" nightmare for us on the side of the lake. Please take a minute to help make this a reality for many generations of airboaters to come.

i think it is cool that they are thinking of putting a park right on the lake.but that property was taking from from good people ,say they needed it for a water treatment plant.i know if i had owned property their .and i was foist to sell ,then they used the placed for some thing different,i would be pissed.i am all for the park,we just can't forget all those people that owned land their.i know it was nice after all day of riding going back to a home away from home.

COUNTY COMMISSION
In other action Wednesday, the Polk County Commission:

# Approved an agreement with the South Florida Water Management District to build a 136-acre park on Lake Kissimmee near the former Shady Oaks Fish Camp.

Just remember if there are gong to put something like that in there. There is probably going to be alot more law officers hanging around.

Has anyone calculated how long it would take to run across a piece of water 136 acres in size ? I have. Not long.

I sincerely hate to sound like an Ogre, but it sounds to me like the newest strategy might be to provide us with a 'playground', and then go on and do as they will with the rest of the Kissimmee chain ?
It sounds to me like they are containing us to a specific area as a concession. It smells like a trap to me. Sorry, JMO.

It was my impression that the acres of park are on the land and include ramps, parking primitive camping, restrooms, etc.

And the park is an airboat gateway to the whole chain.

Not 135 acres of "roped off" water for us to use. That would be ridiculous!

I've not seen any solid info though. Still, it sounds like a good deal.

I believe 135 acres (if square) would be about 1/3 mile by 1/3 mile. Not big.
