Lake Hatchineha

We are new in town and would like local info on where the best airboat launch is on this lake and where does everyone hang out. Are there any "hills". Any info appreciated.

Chrome,
If you are on Lake Hatchineha, you are already halfway there. Actually, there is only one place to launch and that is Port Hatchineha. So, if you have already been out to Lake Hatchineha, I do not understand your question. Now, as for a place to run, it is all yours .... Hatchineha, Cypress, Kissimmeee and beyond. If you are looking for a group to hang with and there is nothing happening at Port Hatchineha, then head over to Camp Mack. However, you had better have a big boy boat to hang with some of those boys. You know what they say about running through the tall grass.

Chrome,
PS - If you are new to the area and Hatchineha,STAY OFF of the Dead River! It is not for novices! More than one airboater has lost a limb or a life there.

Thanks for the info,
I found the launch this weekend , it was my first time, I ran the edge of the lake, I did notice cypress heads sticking out of the water on the northside. It made me nervous so I went back south. I saw the dead river on my map. What makes it so dangerous ? I am curious.

It is not called the Dead River for nothing!
Ask some of the locals about it. There is a fellow lying in ICU as we speak from an airboat accident on the Dead River last weekend. I encourage you to get to know the territory before you venture off the beaten trail.
Be safe and happy airboating!

Chrome,

Welcome to the area. There is plenty of airboating opportunity available from Port Hatch, or from Camp Mack or from Thomas Landings - all on the western shore of the Kissimmee Chain.

Gathering spots for airboaters include both ends of the Cypress Canal. The western end is known as BS Hill - for obvious reasons. Plenty of weekend company and most airboaters travelling into Gardner Marsh stop there coming and going.

From BS Hill, drop south and run southeast along the main hammock shoreline trail. It will lead through great airboat running to the "road crossing". Continue southeast along the main trail and you will soon come to an excavated water hole and dirt mound known as the "Catfish Pond" - another common gathering spot and refreshment stand.

From the Catfish Pond, the main trail turns due south and runs along the myrtles into North Cove of Lake Kissimmee. Strait south across the mile of open water is the "Milk Bus Cut Off". A mile of mostly dry ground running due south and you will find the skeleton of the "Milk Bus" under a point of live oak trees. If you can't run the drt ground, don't try this route. Just keep the marsh island on your right foot (south) and follow it around the marsh & tussett peninsula back to the "Bus".

From the "Bus" run the main Kissimmee Lake edge to the right (southwest) and it will lead you to the Kissimmee River Ditch and the "Ridge", where it empties into Lake Kissimmee. Watch the big tussett just north of the ditch - for it has trapped hundreds of airboaters with its' black Super Glue Mud. Go around it.

The "Ridge" is where the airboats are usually separated. Those on top, are those on top. Those at the bottom are usually mostly "ride" boats. I have seen three dozen boats there on plenty of Saturday nights.

From the "Ridge" enter the canal running north and you'll soon pass the oxbow into Camp Mack. Keep going and Lake Hatch will open in front of you. Follow the west shoreline to Port Hatch or the east shoreline back to BS Hill.

There you go. Good Running.

Strongly suggest you join Kissimmee River Valley Sportsmans Association. It is the airboaters group that fought the big money ranchers to open what I've just described to you.

Big Daddy,

Which would be your place of choice for camping?
Camp Mack, Thomas Landing or Port Hatch?

Can you camp in the "outback" around the lakes, (legally)?

Thanks,

Jeff

My Kissimmee Marsh launches of choice are Thomas Landings - if I'm going to spend the night; Camp Mack if it's a day trip / Thomas Landings is the most airboat friendly place I know. Watch out for submerged fence posts. Both offer 92 octane fuel, neither offer AvGas. More tourists this time of year at Camp Mack. Great airboating from either spot.

Hey,

Can anybody tell me how the water level is at Kissimmee this week?

Did ya'll get the rains that pounded us down here last week?

Thanks,

Jeff
