Lake Okeechobee Fire

Got a chance to look over at the lake while crossing the bridge into Moore Haven this afternoon and it looked like the lake from Lakeport to Clewiston was blazing mighty hard. Must be some kind of new lake cleanup!

I ain't seen the fire, but my old chevy is in the driveway..... covered with ashes.
It must be a doozy!

I'll try to do a little recon on Sat. after the Chalo Nitka festivities in Moore Haven. Hey Rich, I've been working with Plumcrazy to rework his belt drive from a 1.77 to a 2:1 this week so we can try it out on Lake O this Sat.

JD,
Get er done.....went out Saturday evening, dropped the boat in 9PM for a late night cruise. We drove right up to the fire with the boat. A friend of mine and I, against the wishes of my wife walked up to the fire to get a close up and warm up a bit. It's burning real good and I hope the whole place burns..BTW,where we were you could hear hogs squeelin all over the place.

Maybe we can find the same on Saturday! I'm open to a good barbecue during a ride on the big lake. Looking forward to meeting up on Sat. if all works out.

Wish we could have a similar event in Gardner / Cobb Marsh. All that "fuel" - rotting and dense vegitation - is killing the traditional wetland marsh. SFWMD managing for cows.

Fire has naturally taken care of organic accumulation for as long as Florida has been out of thewater. Now, when the rains come again - IF??? - all that loose vegitation will wash into the lakes and create muck....which will then be scraped away after our lakes are one again drained to be restored. IMO - Let R Burn.

Handle it the way the locals used to manage Middlefield....don't think for a minute these Okee fires were caused by lightening.

The locals I have talked to are saying it is being burnt on purpose. I guess you are off the hook Rich.

Rich 55 gal drums of fuel is a little more then stoking it

Ok I'm learning who's who now, Rich is the fire bug and Randy is the fireman

A little late in getting the pictures out, but I was locked up at work and unable to get them online.

For those that don't know the helicopter is used to drop ping pong balls to start the fires that you see in the other photos
