NEWS RELEASE
Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is recruiting volunteers for "Tidy Up Toho", an effort to collect and remove tons of debris and rubbish cluttering the lake and marring its beauty. The clean-up is set for 8 a.m., until noon, Sat., May 22.
"This is another step in the drawdown and habitat enhancement project that began last November on Lake Toho," said Adriene Landrum, FWC freshwater fisheries biologist and coordinator of the Tidy Up Toho project.
Registration for Tidy Up Toho begins at 7:30 a.m., under the pavilion of the Kissimmee Lakefront Park. The first 300 people to sign up the morning of the clean-up will get a t-shirt, and everyone who participates is invited to a free cookout at the park that begins after the clean-up is finished. All registered volunteers will also be automatically entered in drawings for prizes that will be given away during the cookout.
Airboats and other vessel operators are welcome and encouraged to come out and participate in the clean-up. All vessels can safely access the lake from Richardson's Fish Camp and Lake Toho Resort (formerly Red's Fish Camp). Airboats only can also access the lake at Kissimmee Lakefront, and operators are asked to pre-register with the FWC by calling 407-846-5300.
"Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather, wear old sneakers and be prepared to get dirty. They should also wear hats and use sunscreen to help protect them from the sun," said Landrum.
The FWC will provide trash bags and other supplies needed to collect the debris. Participants should bring chairs or picnic blankets for the cookout afterwards.
For more information about the project, or to pre-register, please call the FWC's Kissimmee office at 407-846-5300.
