Legal FL number specs

Does anybody know how big the FL lettering must be. Their writing tickets around here for that and I want to be legal?

I found this information for ya thunder...

Numbering
The Florida registration number issued to a vessel is permanent and remains with the vessel as long as it is operated or stored in this state, even though its ownership may change.
The registration number issued to an undocumented vessel is to be painted or permanently attached to both sides of the bow (forward half) of the vessel and must be in block letters and numerals at least three inches high. The registration number must read from left to right, must contrast in color with the hull and be maintained in legible condition.
The prefix and suffix must be separated from the numerals by a space equal to the width of the digits, i.e., FL 0001 AB.

board at work today! hope this is what you needed. dc

Thanks allot you just prevented me from committing a very serious crime. 3 min height got it.

in the event that someone needs to know about the Hull #'s the link above will give them that information as well.. seems like there had been some descusion on that one time or another...this is an issue for me! Information good for the forum.
Glad I could save you some change$
No person shall operate on the waters of this state a vessel, unless the vessel displays the assigned hull identification number. A hull identification number is unique to the vessel and allows its positive identification.
The hull identification number must be carved, burned, stamped, embossed or otherwise permanently affixed to the outboard side of the transom or, if there is no transom, to the outermost starboard side at the end of the hull that bears the rudder or other steering mechanism, above the waterline of the vessel in such a way that alteration, removal or replacement would be obvious and evident.
The characters of the hull identification number must be of not less than 12 in number and no less than one-fourth inch in height. Vessels for which the manufacturer has provided no hull identification number and homemade vessels constructed or assembled by the owner shall be assigned a hull identification number by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles

Y'all forgot one major issue. The current years' registration sticker "MUST" be within six(6) inches of the registration number.

fWC TOLD ME THE OTHER DAY THAT I SHOULD PUT THE registration sticker ON THE SIDE OF THE SEAT THATS WHERE THEY HAVE THEIRS SO IT WON'T GET RUBBED OFF IN THE STICKS ALSO SAID THAT THE # COULD BE ON THE RUDDERS JUST HAD 4 IN ONES MADE FOR THE RUDDERS

Ain't what the regulations say. And i ain't gonna be the one they make an example out of to give a ticket to.

I was stopped by FWC today on the Withlacoochee River. They were VERY courteous and very professional. They checked my registration, life jackets and safety equipment. I have no complaints with them. They just did their job and were very professional about it. There was no harassment against airboaters involved.

As a side note, my friend I was with, did not have numbers that met the regs. I told him about it before we left. They did not say anything about his numbers to him.

My buddy got harrassed on Sunday up here on Orange. They hit him for his numbers (his are painted on rudders) "not clear enough" and even though he didn't have any alcohol on the boat, they gave him a sobriety test because they said his eyes were red.

I recently called the Jupiter Office of the FF&G and spoke to a Lieutenant regarding this issue. When I purchased my airboat the numbers were on the rudder and the decal was on the operators seat. After several minutes of reading and rereading the law he confirmed that the numbers may be located in either of two positions (both sides near bow in contrasting colors and decal within six inches on port side, or numbers and decal on rudders with same distance for decal). I explained to him that my numbers completly coveredt the top of the rudders and there was no room to put the decal inline with them. He sugested that I place it near the numbers, but also said that "By The Book Bob" could still write me up. He also said that there are no provisions allowing for the decal to be affixed to the operators seat. He left me a bit frustrated and with no clear direction, unless I relocated my numbers and decal to the port and starboard bow area. Anyway, I placed the decal just below the numbers on the port rudder and I guess I'll see what happens.

It will probably be just fine Flcracker. I put my numbers, and decal on the port bow, and just a number on the starboard. They do get beat up by sticks and branches, but that's where " By the Book Bobby" will have to stuff his head to see the reg numbers on the decal.

It's just a shame that thats where a cool enforcement officer would have to go as well, but he probably won't if he can see it's not expired.

I just went by what the regs said when I put my I.D. number, and decals on the boat. If those are the rules, then that should be that. Most folks I know have always done the same.

I also know plenty of folks who have been displaying thier numbers as you are, and have had no real problems.

I have been asking around about the new over old decal scenario, and nowhere can I find that that's against the law. Sounds like the Melborne officers may be making the law up as they go along.

If I get cited for that violation, we are going to court.

I guess that Law dogs are like Airboaters. There's always a few bad apples in every barrel. I'll just keep hoping that I don't run across any.

Cowboy you can go to court if you want to or you can click the link at the beginning of this thread and read for your self and then you can save yourself some money and agravation. It is very clear that the old decal must be removed. Just tryin to hep.

I measured mine again. I think I have the spacing 1/16 of an inch to close. I guess I should redo them so I don't get a ticket.

Hey big boom your alright as long as your within .060 thousands if your letters are .059 apart your looking at a ticket. So if I ever see a FWC guy measuring someone’s FL numbers with a set of calipers I know it’s you being pulled over. LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
