light hull maybe

well i have never made a boat hull before but i'm good at working with good not great. what if i made my hull with say 1/8 panel board then glass over that I know i will need more glass but would this be better the 1/4 plywood I'm using the 2 seater lake buggy plan to go by. I want to make it shorter and a little wider they have it at 12'x5'.

Would it be better to use srews or nails? what are so other way to keep the wieght down? I can't make it out of alum right now. thanks for the help

I 'd say away form the paneling for a core :!:

screws are much better then nails but you don't need them if you want to build light glass use a density high tensile foam core and some light layers of glass with epoxy resin not polyester resin.

with the foam core use a stitch-n-glue method should be easy and save weight,if doing a soil glass use some light weight materials witch you can research an use the on off method over a temp plug

whats the diffrents in the two resins? what do you mean by stitch-n-glue? I have a friend that work at proline boats as a glasser, He will be doing all the glass work for me I just have not had much time to talk to him about the hull yet. I'm going with a 2.6-1 with a 60" 2blade wood prop and about 50hp

I did some reseach on the foam core and the stich and glue. my uncle owns a stucco company and can get me sheets of 2 lbs denstiy foam cheap. what is the going price on epoxy resin? Thanks for all the help guys

jsoh,
if that is the foam am thinking you won't want t use it it doesn't have any structural strength do a internet search for dvriycell (spelling?) or lookup a site called mother of all marintime links or glen-L they should help you

this stuff is prettie tuff. it stronge enogth to screw togather.it not like the foam you get with a new dvd player(only other kind of foam i can think of right now) I weigh about 270lbs and i have steped on it,and it not broke it just dented alittle bit. I will check out the site you told me to check on. I will try to find the foam i"m talking about and post a link on here. get back to work on cajuns boat so I can get some more ideals!!!

about how much does a 12'x7' glass hull weight just a guess will do thanks for the help

well this little one of cajuns the guy told him the hull and riging was like 285 I think he said he has a light hull looks to be mostly solid glass except the transom and stringers

get me a picture of that other stuff and I tell you ya or na I used to use allot of that when I was building boats (and a plane) out of glass the good stuff is not cheap but a 1/4 piece of it was high tensisal strength then some other 4" stuff . if you want to build it light then spend a little money and do it right the one off fiberglass would work if you want to leave out the foam core

Oh ya been pull his engine apart day it's getting dark so I can go bead blast the parts in a few minutes

well when I say cheap I don't mean free. He get a good discount, He buys about $70,000 dollars worth of foam from them a year. He told me that he may have left over foam laying around to build the boat out of
