Lightest 6 cylinder a/c

I know this has been beat to death, but what is the lightest 6 cylinder a/c engine? I was thinking a continental E-185, but dont know the weight????

The continental 0300 is lighter than the e-185 but is only 145 hp. The franklin 6 cyl. were pretty light also. Do you mean which engine is lighter above 470 cu. in?

i know that a lycoming 0540 SV is lighter than the AV and Cont. 0470. Waterthunder did a lot of measurements on different engines....he'd be the man to talk to...

I was just wondering mainly what a/c engine was the lightest that is seen alot in the airboats?

The lightest big bore 6 cylinder that I know of is the E-185. They came in wet and dry sump versions with the dry sump being a little lighter. The E-185 is around 340-360lbs dry.

Know that I dont know anything about a/c engines...So with that said, will a E-185 case accept 470 cylinders, or single mag GPU cylinders. Had to ask cause I have 4 unused cylinders single mag GPU cylinders at the house itching to go on something. Looking for light weight.

E-185 cylinders are almost identicle to GPU cylinders, main difference being the intake is on the bottom of the E-185. The pistons are pretty much the same part as well.

So where is the weight difference come in at? I remember WaterThunder saying that a GPU weighs in at 575 lbs (according to an old post on here). That is a big weight difference between the two!!!! Thanks again for all yall's replies.

I weigh everything that is required to run. This includes oil and a oil cooler. I have seen O540's weights all over the map. The parallel small journal is the lightest and then you can go up to a angle valve large journal. I have seen them as light as 450LBS and as heavy as 560Lbs.

A GPU 4 cylinder may be that light but a six cylinder is a anvil! I have weighed over ten GPU's on three different scales and I ain't ever seen one be light. I must state all my weights are with oil, water, oil cooler, rad, starter, flywheel, carb or injection, alt, headers. I weigh what it requires to run on a boat.

This is from a post a while ago:

"I weighed a carbureted parallel valve O540 and a fuel injected angle valve O540 Lycoming, I also weighed a 520 Continental and a GPU470. The parallel valve weighed 448LBS the angle valve weighed 473LBS and the 520 ironically weighed 520LBS and get this one the 470GPU weighed a whopping 570LBS. All motors had lightweight starters, alternators, flywheels and headers the 220GPU was the only one with an oil cooler. I used our lab scale that is certified and calibrated quarterly and then double checked it against our shipping scale. Both read within 3LBs. I also have a Lycoming operators manual that shows 16 different versions of O540’s that all weigh over 400LBS. Funny you mentioned this because I presently have a bet with a buddy that an O540 weighs over four hundred pounds. He swears they don’t he has several Internet sources claiming so but I go by what I see with my own two eyes on a scale that I know is calibrated. I have also weighed some Lycoming 160’s and 180’s."

im in the aviation business for a living. the weight's for the 0540 come from lycoming. i can assure you there are model's less than 400 lbs. if you give me you model number i can tell you the weight. and the gpu's weight far less the 575 lbs even with accessories. the accessories weight 57 lbs that includes the following air-tech alternator, starter, flywheel, prop adapter, brackets & hardware, 3"headers and stock harrison oil cooler.

gpu rick after seeing your post i called the guy who built my motor and he told me it weighed under 400pds. its a gpu and he also said his 0540 angle valve is around 400pds give or take a couple. after talking to him i was lead to believe that the lightest 6 cylinder is a gpu and he told me you can get just as much horse power out of a gpu than any other 6 cylinder and its lighter.

the lightest 0540 in angle valve is 438 lbs. and the gpu is the lightest big bore engine pound for pound and yes you can build a gpu that will produce 300 hp for at half the cost of buying a run out lycoming engine.

90% of the parallel valve O540's I have weighed were right in the 450's. The angle valves are generally 25 to 30 pounds more of coarse you have a large and small journal, single mag, dual mag and on and on.

Can you make 300 reliable HP from a GPU? If so inlighten this coon azz how you do it please.
