Hillsborough County 4-5-06

The Hillsborough County Parks Department has signs posted at their parks on the upper Hillsborough River banning airboats. While no specific wording banning airboats was found, I was verbally informed there is a ban on airboats within all county parks.

Manatee County

Sec. 2-32-32. Prohibitions. (a) No person shall operate an airboat on any county waters between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. eastern time.
(b) No person shall operate an airboat, at any time, on any county waters except in the channels from county boat ramps to the Intracoastal Waterway, the Intercoastal Waterway, and those waters north of the Anna Maria Bridge (State Road 64) bordered by and east of the Intracoastal Waterway to the western shores of those areas adjacent to Tampa Bay, but not including the Manatee River, Terra Ceia Bay or Miguel Bay.
(c) The above prohibitions and restrictions do not apply to airboats owned or under contract to federal, state or local government entities and operated for official business by duly authorized personnel.
Sec. 2-32-21. Other prohibitions.
(a) Noise pollution.
No person shall operate or give permission for the operation of any vessel on county waters, including the Intracoastal Waterway, in such a manner as to exceed the following sound levels at a distance of fifty (50) feet from the vessel: for all vessels, a maximum sound level of ninety (90) dB A.
(b) Airboats.
(1) No person shall operate an airboat on any county waters between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., Eastern time.
(2) No person shall operate an airboat at any time on county waters in Sarasota Bay south of the Cortez Bridge (State Road 684); in Palma Sola Bay; in Perico Bayou; in Anna Maria Sound north of the Anna Maria Bridge (State Road 64); in Terra Ceia Bay; in Miguel Bay or in Bishop Harbor.
(3) The above prohibitions and restrictions do not apply to airboats owned or under contract to federal, state or local government entities and operated for official business by duly authorized personnel.
Marion County
Sec. 5-17. Vessel noise limitation. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate or give permission for the operation of any vessel on the Rainbow Lakes in such a manner as to exceed a maximum sound level of 90 dB-A at a distance of fifty (50) feet from the vessel. Any person who refuses to submit to a sound level test when requested to do so by a law enforcement officer is guilty of a violation of this section.
Sec. 5-18. Prohibition of airboats and hydroplanes. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate an airboat, or a hydroplane designed strictly for racing, on the waters of the Rainbow Lakes.

Sniper, the way I read what dblj just posted you're good to go.

Sec.2-32-32, para (c) ....... yours is a legitimate SAR boat, and you're there to attend an official function relating to that.

I see that they do however have the 90db@50' restriction in that county though, so mind your manners. :)

Thanks Guy's I will be a good boy I promis and since I just spent all that money to make my boat quit I think it will pass I just want to ride around slow and look over the area and I will be in uniform so that should help to

Sniper,

Several of my guide associates have airboats and run the Little Manatee River regularly. Access is an issue since Shell Point marina has gone condo. There is an access ramp along side US 41 in Ruskin. None have ever had an issue with LEO.

Just guessing, from the description you've given us on the specs. of your new boat and from what I saw in May, I'd be willing to bet that you're running an 80 - 81 db boat at 50' on plane.

I'd like to think that won't draw much attention.

olf art I ordered some supertraps to go on the end of my exhaust to go along with the mufflers that I already have on the boat, I hope to have them before I come down for the event that should realy make it quit but the Q series prop is pure art work it is every thing they said it would be you hardley hear any prop noise who ever the engineer was that designed it has really has his act together

Those Q-tips are something, aren't they ? I love 'em.

Don't forget to go over you trailer before you leave, and have a good safe trip.
Hope you enjoy it.

Sniper can you tell me more about the supertraps? On every boat I try to put the most quiet muffler on I can find, but I'd like to do better if I can. No sound restictions in Iowa but I'd prefer a setup that sounds more like a Honda than a Harley with the mufflers removed.

I have the $100 each stainless 2 1/2 inch Magnaflows. I'll take any suggestions on how to make it more quiet. I like what I hear about the Q prop as well. I currently have a 66x36 Florida Airboat wood prop and my last boat had a 3 blade Warp Drive. They are both loud.

Perhaps this winter I can head down for a few days to get a new hull and hear some of the different props that are quieter.

Des Moines, the new "Q" Sensenich props are amazing in my opinion
They have just a tinge of a 'whistle' at idle, kind of like a constant speed prop has, but they push like crazy. There is none of the wop-wop that you hear with your paddle prop.

Personally, I think you'd like one.

The Supertraps are real cool because you can tune them by adding or taking away plates some folks just run them and nothing else but I think they are a bit loud just by them selves they are real popular with the racing crowd I have the same mufflers you have but mine are 3 in ID and with the supertraps on the end of the exhaust I think I will have a real quit set up I hope as quit as WaterThunders or even quiter for you guys that are reading this the event will be at SunDance Marina is there a place to put in there and if so what is that area like ?

Thanks, Sniper and Olf. I'll try some speed shops around here and see if I can find them locally. When I come down to get my new hull I'll have to hear one of those Q props. I'm sure I'll be hooked and have to get one. Warp Drives are made here in Iowa. I should see if they can produce a quiet prop. I could be their experimental platform for testing.

http://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/p...illsborough County boat ramp Little manatee " the URL listed is the county ramps in Hillsborough - Domino,Ruskin Common Good and Wildcat will work for Little manatee --- I was at Wildcat a couple of weeks ago and a few guys were launching airboats and taking their kids up river to swim .... the list has Sun City ramp on there, but the last time I was there ( about a year ago ) it was blocked off.
