Airboat trader.com - check it out. It may be down for a few days, but typically has lots of boats for sell.

Car motors are easier to get parts.

Lycoming's are fairly simple if you are good at working with motors. But the parts are more expensive.

Might look at something like a continental GPU (ground power unit) that are air cooled engines that were made to run military generators. Built on the same style as the Continental aircraft engines, but cost quite a little bit more.

Typically a good idea to start with a cheaper boat and move up as time goes.

If you want my two cents I would reccommend going with a chevy engine. Parts are cheap and anyone can work on it. Then I would say go with the Franklin Belt Drive and a Composite prop made by Whirl Wind or Powershift. It will run dry ground awesome if you build the right boat or buy the right boat. You don't have to have aircraft to run dry.
Good Luck,
Faron

I'm getting ready to sell my hull and metal works. already rigged for a 350 with rotator also have the back legs of engine stand to make it back to driect drive. metal works 8 months old

now does the riging get old ? i mean does it mater if the boat is 1year old or if its 10 years old is there things i need to look for? buy the same token ive got acess to a welder and a heale arc. but still i dont want my first boat to ba a long term head ake the boat my father has has been nothing but a prob. its a 13.5 alum. with lyc. 0540 with polmer. runs great all around gust ive had problems with the pipes stayin on and it leaks oil like well lets just say it dripes oil like me when ive had a few to many. ive kinda got a bad tast for lyc. because of that. my boss has a 16ft. fiber. with a 350 alum. g drive and a 3 blade carbon fiber itll run great but my dads will out run long hall on dry ground is that just how the two boats are set up or is it just how we run?

well riggin gets old if it gets moisture inside of it and it isnt rust resistant. As for the two boats you mentioned there is a lot of difference in those two the fiber is probably a lot heavier than the shorter alum one. the 350 may be about at its limits on that boat seems too big a boat for a 350 to me. I am probably biased but I like car motors and stainless steel riggin on an aluminum hull but then I have spent a buttload gettin it done. But now that its done its a wonderful thing.

Water thunder on this site sells what sounds like a great engine it is lighter than the o540 and more horses and that weight includes the gear box. as for hulls I would stick to a 13 or 14 x 8 if stayin with the 350 but there are alweays big blocks for a larger hull. just my advice.

I have a 14x71/2 Diamondback with a warmed up ZZ4 and a belt drive with a two blade power shift prop it will run dry ground all day and from what I have learned from my desert racing experence liquid cooled engines make more HP and run longer with a strain on them that's why you see all the racing bikes are liquid cooled now
and with one of Waterthunders all aluminum 350's would be an hot set up on a hull like mine and the parts are cheap and you can find them any where even on the week end.

Sounds like your dad's boat has a motor that is about worn out.

A few facts:

If the pipes are coming off, there IS something wrong with the way they are attached. Been running the same hull for almost 8 years, not once have the pipes came off unless I was turning the wrench on them.

If the motor is leaking that bad, it probably has lots of hours or was poorly put together. Valve gaskets not made from neoprene and the o-ring at the base of the cylinders are two major spots. The block being assembled without the thread gasket will do it as well.

Lots of these motors were put together by someone that was a good mechanic, but was not a aircraft motor guy. Of the 10 or 11 Lycomings around here, there are 4 or 5 that leak badly, 2 or 3 that leak a little, and the rest don't leak much at all. Mostly depends who put them together.

But I think that a 12 to 13 footer with a light rig in the back (aircraft motor or light weight auto set up) will always out handle the V8s. But the autos take the abuse better.

With that all said. I would suggest a beginning boat with a 350 and belt drive if you are going to drive the tar out of it or if you wanted a light hull, take it good and careful with warming up equipment and not going to play hard, go with a GPU.

Low Bridge,

I don't have a anwer for you, but you might consider starting a new thread, I think it will get more attention. Your post is sort or buried here.

Welcome to the board,

Jim
