Looking back 10-15 years

Was driving down the road and thinking back 10-15 years and how there have been some big changes in the Car Motor Boat world.

The Buick, Cadillac and Olds powered boats are becoming extinct and the super new high tech power is not finding its way into the sport.

It’s a shame that Chuck from Airboat Pro’s didn’t live long enough to be able to get his hands on these new Dual Turbo V6 power plants that are becoming so common now in the full size truck world. I remember right before his passing there was a dual turbo GM power-plant being sold think out of a Cadillac and he really wanted to get his hands on that and work some magic.

Those little 3.5 liter all aluminum V6 truck engines are pushing 400 hp 500 fp torque with the boost being conservative. I imagine it would be fairly easy to pinch 500hp just with a tune change.

We just don’t see guys taking a stab at the exotic anymore.

Thoughts ?

Well, reality is there is not a lot of benefit to run a Di engine vs an EFI one in an airboat application. Sure, some fuel economy is possible. Beyond that, pretty much nada.

A 3.5L Turbo is going to produce 500hp in its sleep via EFI, so, build the engine, or buy one from the bone yard and run it with your flavor of EFI controller of choice. Holley is quite popular, with dozens of alternates out there.

A smaller 2.0L like I run can also work just as well at around 400hp. Same difficulty and cost for the most part.

So, I would say that its mostly no perceived benefit to run anything beyond an LS platform because its just very good and nothing is better or cheaper.

Swamp,

You say 3.5, but unless you are going Ford I assume you are talking 3.6 LF3.

There you go from the biggest advocate we have for small, boosted engines.

443 lbs for a 3.6 with all the twin turbo's, intercooler and plumbing is about the same as an LS3 platform that can make 600 Hp NA easy. Throw all that turbo crap at it and you can go 1000+ if you want.
