ok so getting close to pulling the trigger on block and rotating assembly. Stroker kit looks like

LUNATI 416 LS3 STROKER KIT, BALANCED 11.5:1 CP PISTONS

LS3 Stroker Kit, Lunati 4340 Forged Crankshaft 4.000 Stroke, 9.240 Deck Height, Lunati 6.125 H-Beam Rods with ARP2000 Bolts, CP-Carrillo Premium Forged -2.7cc Flat Top Pistons, 11.5:1 Compression Ratio, Balanced Assembly

which reluctor wheel should I go with?

Which reluctor depends on the ECM. I would get the 58X and make sure you get an ECM that will work that.

For efi the original computer will work but you need something like HP tuners ( just 1 of several oem tuning softwares) to change the parameters.

I helped build a few boats for friends all with junkyard motors. Most have had over 100k on them when pulled. 1st 3 were done with a carb and MSD boxes. 2 have been EFi one with holley and 1 with OEM and Hp tuners. All 5 still running strong. One thing is with OEM you can still reading the codes for trouble shooting issues and can syn with your phone using a OD2 bluetooth unit. If you know the motor and what it comes in try http://www.car-parts.com. One of the junkyard 5.3 we used had 113k when pulled spent 3 years on my buddies boat then 2 more years on my boat. When we fished we would run his boat 3800-4200 for 30 minutes to an hour.

Last motor I put on my boat was a 6.0 iron block off craigslist(which I do not recommend - no telling what you will get)

I got the stock motor for 600.00 no intake or accessories. I had a set of 706 heads worked (changed valves to 2.00 out of 317 head) minor porting to clean casting up. 706's are cheap because they had smaller intake valves but it increased the compression due to the smaller chamber. Found a deal on the cam I liked with matching springs upgraded the rockers, pushrods, new GM lifters and trays. Motor is maybe 375hp with a 2.68 gearbox. I also got Corvette Accessories ( Alternator bracket, tensioner, waterpump and belt )and 7qt oil pan from Smuggler on here (SA) for a good deal.

I have less than 2,800 in the motor and been running it for over a year. It is on a 14' boat the is set-up to fish the gulf not super heavy and certainly not an ultralight.

I personally have never had a big budget to build, but have found if you have cash in hand and spend time searching there are good deals to be found.

Be careful listening some of the racecar guys as there mind is in the high RPM's and most CM airboats turn 5,000 to 6,000rpms. Educate yourself there is a great deal of information to sift through. Especially when it comes to stroker motors.

Also look back a CMB's List answer question 3,4,and 5 honestly, because a 15' plus boat with 4 people and gear needs a good bit of hp, proper set-up and overbuilt to run the ground hunting for long periods of time.

Hope my rambling helps.

All the newest run the 58x as CMB stated which depends on ecm. the 24x isn’t as accurate as the 58x and some new software computers only run off the 58x if it’s a 6.2 or for a 6.2 it’s a 58x

I do not have a prop or gearbox and would like to hear suggestions in that department as well. I do have SS cage, rigging and a motor mount

Did the cage, rigging & motor mount come with the hull? What is the largest diameter prop that will fit the cage?
How old is the hull, what shape is it in and does it have poly installed?

You can find some good deals on used gearboxes & props if you can wait, if not you may spend ~$6K new.

A lot of great CM info in this thread! :salute: Good luck with your build...... :thumbleft:

No, didn't come with the boat. I swung by GTO after I bought the boat to see if they had something lying around I could make work that I could get a deal on, and they did. I haven't mocked the whole set up up but was assured it was suitable for my boat. The width of the cage does go from gunwale to gunwale on my 96" wide boat, that I have confirmed but I couldn't tell you what the distance from the center of the flywheel to edge of the cage will be once everything is together. The cage was damaged in a collision and needs some repair. This is the type of thing I do professionally so is not a huge concern. The rigging is new, motor mount new but incomplete. My understanding is they got into rebuilding and repairing everything after the incident and midway the customer decided to do something else. It is rigging built for a deck over, and the boat is not decked over. Looks to me like walkways up the sides are really all thats necessary to make it work, which I want anyway and is something I am equipped to do.

Boat itself is in excellent shape, was built in 06. It does have 3/8 poly I would say is in good shape, couple gouges in it and a few cracks around the fasteners out at the outer edge.

I'd be all over a used prop and gear but theres been slim pickins since I started looking. Keeping an eye peeled though.

Yes lots of great info, really appreciate it. Might be for naught though, had a conversation with waterthunder today and I could see us striking a deal. I'm disappointed in a way, was looking forward to putting it together, but its not like I don't have enough to do. We'll see, nothing is etched in stone. I'll keep the thread going with progress either way.

Best way to talk with Dave at water thunder is call him or Tex. He replies back quickly I have a 418 being built as we speak. His customer service has been excellent. I paid for my motor 4 weeks ago and motor is built were waiting on oxbox. Everything has be done on timeline we agreed on. Can’t be more happier with the way Dave has answered all my dumb questions.

Spend the extra money and buy a waterthunder.

Research the vendor you order motor Thur. There are a lot of them out that will take you money and drag out your built.

Thanks unforgiven,

Undecided about carb or efi, thats one reason I started the thread. Would it be reasonable to say if I buy a pull out engine that some of the stock fuel system can be re used for an efi build? If so is it worth it?

I stopped reading anything below when I read the above!
What do junkers do when they break on purpose of cheapness? Help, I've fallen and cant get up,,, button?

Not that a quality boat can't be built on a dime, but that's for fools with very great friends to support a junk yard build to fuel delivery!

LOL that new 2.0 turbo caddie with water and oil cooler cooled turbo is pushing similar to the old school iron at half the cost and twice the economy with a intercooler and correct tune.
Yes sir, I have your starter in stock,
