Propellor injures man after airboat rolls on ice

GUTTENBERG, Iowa An Epworth man has been injured from the propeller of an airboat on the Mississippi River near Guttenberg.

Lee Hoerner was hospitalized today with shoulder and arm injuries after the boat rolled on ice. He was hurt by the propellor while trying to free another passenger, Mark Kramer, who was pinned underneath the boat.

Kramer and the boat's operator, Billie Deutmeyer, of Guttenberg, did not receive serious injuries.

Hoerner was taken to the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and then transferred to University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. His condition was not immediately available.

The incident is being investigated by the Department of Natural Resources and Guttenberg police.

They don't say in the story, but I'll bet it was a home built mini airboat. small HP motor, and cut down for weight which eliminated a lot of safety. There is safety in numbers.... even when the numbers are HP numbers! Are you listening Cold'eh?

The problem on packed snow and ice is trying to stop. It takes a little practice to figure it out. I usually spin the boat around and go the opposite direction on ice. They really move.

Waterlizzard has said it many times and I'll say it again...
Training, training training AND, practice, practice, practice........
Not to say that these folks were under trained or lacked stick time in the enviroment being run. Just throwing out the Training and Practice thing again... AND, while I'm on the proverbial soap box, don't forget your PFD either... There!! I'm off the box now...
Everyone have a safe and happy New Year.
Brian.

And don't forget that you have a 2000. lb. toboggan when your on the winter cover. Our first trip (many years ago) in a field with hills and ONE electric pole in the middle of the hill AND of course being the first time out with the video camera running--- I'm glad my son was driving--- No one hurt --Just a HUGE DENT----

Oh sure Ron, blame it on your son...
It's funny how one (pole, rock, hole or tree, take your pick) can suddenly get so big in the middle of a 40 acre field..... (don't tell anyone but my airboat seems partial to rocks and fire hydrants..) Happy holidays.
Brian.

Sniper,

I don't think the decals will stick in this kind of weather up here... I do have one posted in my office though, looks great!!

Ron,

Whatever Sniper tells you about railroad switches and my airboat, DON'T BELIEVE HIM!!

Happy new Year..

Brian.
