We dodged a bullet by millimeters. House survived with little damage, had gusts over 120 mph and I really didn't know if this old building would stand. Guess it was made well years ago. The wall of water missed us by just a few miles. Sabine Pass and lower Cameron Parish really took it hard.
I sent the family out early and slipped out late Thursday, went through lower Cameron Parish and north of Lake Charles through the back roads. If you know the way the traffic was light and I did 55 most of the way.
Watched the monster take down trees north of Lake Charles in Longville at my brother in-law's all night and waited for the trailer tires to pop from the weight of the rain or the boat to blow away. We started chain sawing out at 7:30 AM on Saturday. We cleared the way to the highway as the State Police were trying to get in. Turned around and joined another family with a saw and tractor to clear the road into the river bottoms. State police took my cell phone number and said call if there a hurt people and got out of the way. Meet a group of 5 saws and two tractors clearing the road out. Started back south with the boat and went towards Hackberry LA were other family and friends homes were. The LA game wardens had a mess of boats there and said the only people there were planing on staying, no need for assistance so I headed west to Texas.
That I-10 is strange at night with no lights or street signs. Missed the exit 3 times. Finally made it to a friends house outside of the road blocks and we went in the next morning with his rig (Law Enforcement). There was lucky no need for the boat. But people lost alot. Didn't see the media coverage much but the lost here impacted nearly 100% of the people in lower SW LA. Was back there several times the first two weeks trying to help out folks I know. There was no looting. I ran into a few people I knew on the Monday after the storm and two of them were packing shotguns as the were checking the neighborhood and emptying freezers for folks. Deputies down there are good guys, lots of them had lost homes, yet they worked straight through the first two weeks. Any looters south of the GIWW would probably have not needed a trial. But it was great to see the LE folks from all over the US.
Lots of them will rebuild. Tent are pitched all over already.
But the sad truth is the immediate wave of looters were prevented but the second crew of looters has arrived under the name of insurance companies. Sad to see the way they take the money and run.
Just got a phone line back working today. Hope RJ is ok and just having similar issues.
