I’m feeling in a pensive mood, so I think I’ll tell a Christmas story. A true one. One night I had a flight home on Christmas Eve. I was flying a 727 over Michigan headed for Chicago. Yes, I lived among Yankees for a while; it made me appreciate the south.
The first flight attendant came up front with some sleigh bells and asked if I could tell a story using the bells for the kids on board. This is the story I made up:
Ladies and gentlemen I have just been advised by air traffic control (ATC) that NORAD has issued a position for Santa and he is in our area. I have asked for a vector to intercept his course. I have tried to get along side him before and he is pretty tricky, but I think I can do it this time this airplane is pretty maneuverable. I will be making a few turns as we get in close to try to get him in a position where you can see him. (After a few minutes)---Well, I have him is sight now and we are on a perfect intercept heading and we should be along side in a few minutes. (I made a few more turns)�Well, the Jolly old elf has out maneuvered me again and he is going to pass directly over us.
Then I rang the sleigh bells on the passenger address system. Have a Merry Christmas.

The flight attendant said that everyone on that plane was looking out the windows and they all got a big kick out of the story. The first part of the story actually happened. I asked ATC about Santa and they gave me the NORAD position report. I did ask for the intercept vector, and ATC complied. I told them I would be making a few more turns to try to get into position to see him and I was cleared to do that.
