Mothballing a motor

Got a buddy going to have to put his boat in storage for over a year. He is worried about rust starting in the cylinders and inside the motor while it is sitting up in the high humidity.

Anyone know anything he could do to the cylinders and maybe put in the block to stop rust from forming.

Pat,

Outboard fogging oil comes in an aerosol can and will take care of the cylinders. I use it again just before start up.

If it is a Lycoming, I don't know what to tell you about the cam. I would call Lycoming, or one of the trusted builders.

Marshmaster,
I agree with Jim.
Outboard fogging oil sprayed into the cylinder spark plug holes, top and bottom. Sturn the engine over a few times on the starter, and then spray them down a second time. That should coat the cylinder walls real well.

First I'd get it real hot, and cap off the crankcase breather. Seems like that would have the crankcase dry, and hopefully it will stay that way after capping it.

Looked at a lycoming manual, and they have a procedure for spraying oil into the cylinders, but mentioned nothing about pickling the crankcase.
The lycoming procedure was good for thirty days of storage.

I am not an expert on the subject nor have I had a Lycoming engine but I have filled automotive engines with diesel and stored with success.

Go to NAPA and ask for a spray called "The Fogger"

It should be stocked at any NAPA store
