I am looking into getting out of the car motor.
I have two motors i looking at a 220 gpu or a 0470. What are the advantages or disadvantages which has more power reliability.
In terms of power by prop size will it turn or expect to turn.
 
Without knowing the condition of either motor it is hard to say which of the two is better. But both are 470 cubic inch. The aircraft version will always be the better choice. Even in a run out condition they were still built with certified parts. GPU motors were government overhauled. What we do not know about your two motors is are they both fresh built motors, or are they old motors that have been run for years. The main problems with the GPU motors is that they were all steel bore cylinder barrels. If it is in original unoverhauled condition the cylinders are usually rust pitted and wore out. The only way to get them back is to bore +.015 or chrome them back to standard. They also have a real low compression piston. By the time you add up a starter kit, second mag, holley carb and intake,chrome cylinders and hi compression pistons you can usually have a lot of money tied up in a GPU. The 0-470B is a 240 hp motor ready to go. The GPU is around 170-180 hp stock. I would choose the aircraft version.

I agree with Mike. I would think if your not going to rebuild them and want to run them as they are do a leak down and a compression test if your going to rebuild them go with the A/C motor hands down!
 
Where can I get High comp. pistons for my GPU? How much do they usually run? And what kind of HP increase can I look for with them and the extra mag. My GPU runs great but would like a little more out of it.

Grant, That would be great! I've heard of several people hereabouts that have parts but when I ask for info I find out it's just someone trying to get rid of junk and make a quick buck. When are gonna come up and let's go for a ride. Kinda dry here in the marshes, but the coast is always wet. Better yet, I'm gonna get my boat fixed and coime down there. I sure do miss the so fla swamps.

I wouldn't go dome but flat top should work great. Dome just doesn't last long. And in some cases twist your crank.
