Motor Trouble

i'm having some trouble on my 220 gpu, and i've got just enough mechanical knowlege to get myself in trouble. I've tried everything, and cant figure out why it wont stay running.

It'll fire over with starter fluid, but only stays running for 3-4 seconds, then shuts off. when i took the breather off to see if my injectors were clogged on my carb, they're all spraying, and its got 2 brand new fuel filters, so i dont think gas availability is a problem. all of my spark plugs are firing also, so i know its not a missfire on one of the cylinders. the only thing that i havent done yet is check compression. there's a little bit of water in the gas, but would that be enough to keep it from running?

any help is greatly appreciated!

If it runs on a huff of starter fluid, then it should run.

Sounds like a fuel issue for sure.
Can't say your compression is fine on all cylinders, but that should'nt cause the problem you discribe.

If you think you have water in it, then you'll probably have to drain the float bowl out, and try it again.

Drain the carb, and try to feed it with a gravity fed temp fual supply.

Sorry 85,
I had to cut that last post short.

I would just hook up a small can of clean fuel, and let it feed your float bowl. Unless it's a giant can way up in the air, I would not expect it to overcome your float needle.

This will just let you confirm that it is a fuel issue, and if so, the problems are from the supply side of the carb on back to your tank.

If it runs on the clean gas, clean out your hoses / fuel pump / tank checking for water. Just do what yuo gotta do to get all that sorted out.

If you think you have water in your carb, your gonna have to drain, or dump your float bowl before anything else.

When you have the fuel line off the carb, crank it over with the ignition off, and lett the fuel squirt into a clean bottle. This may show water in your fuel supply also. If it has a cartridge type fuel filter / seperator.. dump that in a bottle, and look for water.

Get it figured out.
You can do it.

Be careful also.

i really appreciate the help! i'd rather try and take care of it myself and learn something in the process than to have to pay someone else to do something simple, haha.

I agree with Cowboy. Clean out the carb bowl and run fresh gas. If you have a single drop of water in the carb, it will not run. It may spray water and gas but the water will clog the jet and keep fuel from getting to the engine.

I assume your timing is all right. The compression should be a minimum of 60 over 80. The closer to 80 the better but compression isn't your problem. Fuel is. If it runs on ether, than it will run on gas as long as you get some gas to it. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Might want to check your intake runners for vacuum leaks, It has been know that the can blow off where the hose connect the runners together.

thank yall for the tips, i got out here tonight and pulled all of the fuel lines off of the carb, then sprayed new gas directly into it, and it started up after a few cranks. i figured i'd try it again in the morning to see if i can keep it running by spraying gas directly into the breather. wish me luck, haha.

I'd do the compression check first. I'd have bet $ I had a fuel problem on my last gpu---spent a lot of time only to find I had lost two cyinders and was only runnin' on four.

what did it run you to replace those cylinders?

and off hand, has anyone done the 470 conversion? if so, what'd it run money wise compared to the horsepower boost you got from it?

Country boy it all depends on who you have do it i know JC does alot of these and jim lauderdale is a wiz at getting 285 plus out of a gpu by adding a second mag and a couple of other things. its been awhile since i had my motor done, but you can give them a call and find out both there #'s are on airboattrader.com both these guys are gpu wizez

i got it up and running today and let it idle for about 15 minutes and she ran strong. hahaha, however when i first cranked it up, i had the springs on the throttle hooked on the wrong holes and it fired up running wide open- gotta love the little mistakes in life.

thanks again to everyone for the advice and help!

yeah, i guess it had a little more water than i thought mixed in with it. i ended up rigging up a line with a gas bulb and manually pumped gas into the carb and it fired right up.

Glad to hear your problem is solved. Happy to hear you got your helicoil fixed so cheap. This site has some of the best people and advise I've seen. I'm guessing it won't be long before I start asking more questions about my new boat with the Continental PE-150 220 GPU. I think it's going to be a winner.
