Mufflers

I just about have the poly done. The question is what is the best configuration for the exhaust. Is it better for the mufflers to be at the end of the pipes or closer to the motor? Also what will perform best? Will be running a 400 small Block, with 202valves headers estimated horse 350 to 375. Cam rpm 1800 to 4800. No I don’t have a gearbox on this boat that has to wait for next year.

Hi Ted,

Welcome to Southern airboat. You can start off by looking in cntry141iq's gallery. He has a very nice exhaust setup and there are some pictures there. I think he has added a couple of bullet mufflers since the pictures were taken. I will leave the rest for him to comment on.

Ted,

Welcome to the most infinate source of infor on airboats in the world!

Do look at the pics of Cntry141iq's muffler set-up. (Notice a "Thunder Trick" adjacent to the transom). There is a small fitting just prior to each transon exhaust flange, (but on the downstream side of the muffler). This is for the most effective PCV possible!

I will do this the first time i have to "cut-into" my exhaust system.

While we're on the subject of mufflers I have a question. Is it better to get stainless mufflers, or non-stainless and send it off to be ceramic coated??

Might be a toss up. stainless costs more turns color unless coated ,regular mufflers lasts a good while when coated. i'm kinda waiting to hear about something that realy works good .if they be stainless great if they be steel I guess they will be coated.currently been running classic stainless bullet mufflers for the last 5 years . I must say they are not much of a muffling device

Muffs will last longer the farther they are from the engine, due to less heat.

Also, coated exhaust helps keep a little heat in the pipes and that helps keep the velocity up.

Thanks I didn't think about longevity. I can say the poly is done and the motors on Hopefully will test Sunday.

I just started running 3" car mufflers and they are quite don't know how long they will last but for $21.00 bucks each if they last 2 years thats fine with me.
