Mullet Run Snook

Florida Cracker

Well-known member
Hit one our favorite spots this afternoon with my nephew. The mullet were solid and so were the snook. We caught somewhere between 8 and 10. The smallest being about 34 inches (I hate the new slot ). We had a least 5 fish over 40 inches, the largest pushing 30 pounds. No pics today, as neither of us had a camera.

Nice report. You did much better than me. I hit the beach today just before dark in time to see the mullet get busted up near the shore. Could not snag one in time and didnt bring any plugs. I left empty handed. Guys next to me caught many Bluefish on Mirrolures. I was looking for Snook, Tarpon, and even Spinners. I will try at sunup instead unless I hit Stuart tonight.

You say you were snaging the mullets?

I was going to say, I use to snag mullet off of my dock when I was a kid, the mullet would come in single file and you just had to wait and toss the hook just before the line and jerk on the biggest mullet in the line. Now for snooks the only time you would see one or I should say two because I never seen one by itself, snooks would just appear by floating up sitting still and would not move for a long tume. The trick is to try and toss the hook on the other side of them with out disturbing them. :D to date I have not ever been able to that.

probably better off since snagging snook is ILLEEEEGAL :lol:sorry thouyght I'd let you KNOW!!! YES the new slot SUCKS :x ..what will they think of next 29" in. maybe ....I'm getting hungry already......Does any-body know if your a American Indian...or NATIVE you are excluded from some fish and wildlife laws????

I am snagging mullet in the surf. They are not right at your feet and too far to throw a net. Also you are walking up and down the beach chasing the mullet. You cant have a lot of gear. One pole snags bait; unsap leader and snap on leader with live bait hook. Hook Mullet. Pitch on edge of bait school. Hang on!

I am well aware of the Snook rules. No snagging, spearing, harpooning etc. I used to fish a marina that had a resident Snook hang by one piling as the tide went out. You could have speared that thing or even free gaffed it a hundred times. I dont like many of the new rules but a snook is not worth $500 or getting your gear or vehicle taken. I like catching them but sure wish ther were more in the slot. The new slot is ridicuous but I play by the rules. Any 12 yr old pier rat worth his salt can snag big fish from an elevated platform. We used to snag big cudas @ LW pier all the time.

I think Native Americans can set their own rules only on the reservation property. I may be wrong though. I am wrong quite a bit. At least my wife says so.

Regards,
Tony

Let it be know I know the rules too, I was refering to at least thirty years ago when I was about 10 or 11 years old. Ahh the good ole days. :D

Went this AM saw no bait but hooked a small Jack for my son. This wind is picking up. It will b rough and rougher for the next few days. Get out the chunk bait and look for bluefish and some Macks.
