Need info: S(l)ick Mag? not now, It's got a BENDIX!

Any of you who've been reading my questions know that RPM's over 2,500 have been a problem. Pulled the cover off the mag and re-did the wires (photo's later) and it finally occured to me to look at the points....after all, they're right there!
they aren't pretty, I can feel a spike when sliding a feeler gauge thru them and the gap is < .012 (smallest gauge on this set) I would estimate .008 ~ .010
going to clean and file them, then check back....hopefully someone will render their best advise for correct gap.
THANKS!

man I can't help on the mag gaps sorry but mike or P2 or Cowboy I sure will chime in

just one other thing and it may have been mentioned in other threads I don't remember bu when I first got my boat I had some problems with sputtering then just wouldn't fire later. Cowboy came to the rescue and stopped by to help me out . the mags ended up being fine just wet but he re-gaped the plugs (and it ran better later) if i remember correctly (please some correct if I state wrong) a week mag set the plugs at .18 and a strong mag set it .20 or .25

Thanks GH_2 the plugs are new and gapped at .018 Besides a heat gun or hair-dryer, is there a chemical or other recccomended treatment for removing and moisture? Spraying WD-40 into a distributor is said to be Kosher, but a mag???
Looking at the mag, it occured to me (and I've done this to farm tractors) that you could easily convert the mag to fire an electric coil the same as a "distributor" ignition: All that's really needed inside are the points. A condenser could be mounted outside or there's plenty of room inside of the gutted mag. It shouldn't be a big deal to drill a hole and feed a coil wire back to the rotor buttom. Granted it's jigg-rigged, but would work, especially if you were in a pinch or had a crapped out Magneto.
Here's a picture of the points:

This is plastic fuel line that's being used to hold the wires in place of the petered-out boots:

marvin has some engines out there with distributors that hook up where the tack drive goes and I was thinking about going that route but have decided it was better when your out in the marsh and the battery dies to be able to prop start the engine with a mag so I am staying with mags

hopefully one of the pros will jump in to help you with the mags

Just break down and buy a good mag... :banghead:

Stubburn as I am, you're right about buying a new mag and I'm sure it'll happen, just gotta have the satisfaction of makeing it work right even if it doesn't last.

If nothing else, it's a good learning experience....once the mag is changed out, I think I'll take it to work and leave it on the bench....see how long it takes someone to pick it up and wind the impulse coupling.

Looks like the cam lobe is just a little out of round. Spend a few bucks and get it fixed. You won't believe how nice life is with a fresh mag. The damage a bad mag can do to an engine just isn't worth it.

If you insist on doing your own repair I might be able to get some information from some manuals I have. The points are usually .018-.022 inches. Be sure to set the edge gap or E-gap to .059-.138 for a starting point. It is recommended that a timing light be used to check the point at which the breaker contacts begin to open. Give us the model of your mag and perhaps we can help. Better yet, send it to me and I'll have it professionally overhauled.

Thanks so much for the offer, but for once I'm going to listen to what everybody is saying and buy a new mag. Hopefully Tom Jeffords still has the one that he had for sale last month. :study:

GOT IT!
Installed it:
Now to try it out. :D

Just a few words to let those interested know that Mr. Jeffords (Speed Wheelie) fixed me up with a very nicly rebuilt Bendix mag. at a very decient price!
When I had a couple questions, he called right back, and called again a day later to make sure everything went well, and it did! Expert advise and a willingness to help someone out who wasn't 100% sure of what he was doing IS customer service. :D
The engine no longer "breaks up" at WOT, but according to the tach it only turns 2,500 RPM. Be that as it may, it seems stronger, but that was on the trailer to.
Maby we'll try another tach just to make sure, after all this one came out of a 1969 2-1/2 ton Military truck that was canibalized.

Glenn Thanks for the props...I hope you got the mag spot on...

This website may have been posted before. Not sure. In case it hasn't I'm going to post it here. Good information on mags.
