No thunder in the country

This website is like a big family and that is good and sometimes a little touchy. I know everyone on here has been tracking the progress of my engine from thunder so to be sure there are no nasty rumors started on here and no bashing of any kind here is all I have to say on it.

1.) my check didn't bounce. 2.) the things that happened were out of thunders control. 3.) we parted friendly..I think 4.) Thunder still is a master mechanic in my opinion and builds a great engine.

Thats my story and I am stickin to it. so please no one start any crap by bashin anyone on this subject.

Country,

Sorry to hear it. Personally I feel blame should be somewhat on my part. I promised Dave that the "new" Dart head was the "sh!t". Unfortunately supply/delivery was a BIG mess, and things went from there.

I was at Dave's tonight looking at the situation, scratching my head. Low and behold....He figured out the problem.

And to be honest....I've never seen anyone as dedicated with anything like he was. I guess, I will leave it up to him, if he want's to make it public, but I know I would if I were in his shoes. Sometimes no matter how much money spent on the best components, we as professionals are left to blame, since we're the final stop (AKA Held responsible).

Honestly, I'm kinda sad that you won't run the engine after the time all parties have invested, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. But building that level of engine.... sometimes comes with a few snags.

Take care
Felber

Felber three months is a lot of snags and to have more was too much Like I said he builds a good motor ... I think the ones I heard run and saw run looked and sounded good that is why I paid for one and paid dearly I might add. The problems were not his but they ended up in his shop and affected me but at some point enough is enough.

Just in case anybody wants to know the facts of the problem. Country’s motor had a Callies crank in it I have used Callies cranks in the past however most of my LS-1 383's I have used Eagle 4340 cranks. After a long discussion with the technical depart of Callies cranks I found out they even make the cranks for G.M’s LS7 they have a special fixture for locating the reluctor ring on the crankshaft this ring is what signals the ignition when to fire. Evidently they had their fixture set up for LS7 cranks when they installed Countries 141's reluctor on a LS1 crank the two cranks require a differant reluctor phasing. After a long debate on how it was impossible to install the reluctor backwards their tech realized it can be done and they did install the reluctor backwards thus the crank couldn’t possibly signal the ignition properly. As always I understood Country’s aggravation and refunded him 100% of his money. I will have the motor running before this weekend and it will find a happy home. Me and Country have no hard feeling over it even after this mess I spent around an hour or so setting him up with a very custom grind for his old 383 that I feel will drastically improve his old combination. Now if Country gives out details of this grind then we might be mad at each other. So enough said and I have learned something from all this, Country got all his money back and Callies got an ear full. Unfortunately for me the only time Callies has installed one wrong was on a Crank that I received, hopefully my misery and 40 plus hours of assembly and trouble shooting will prevent anybody else from ever having this problem. Oh yea Callies is sending out a new crank and will make sure this can never happen again.

Sorry to hear about the poblem's guy's i know from talking to both of you that you have a strong love and devotion to our hobby. but sometimes thing's happen that are out of your control. that's just life but airboater's alway's overcome these obstacles and it sound's like you got this one worked out good luck to you both.

I appreciate the open honest conversation. Weather you(Water, or you (Cntry) were right or wrong, the bottom line is the customer is always right(unfortunately). Being in my own business you win some and loose others. One thing is to always get better and not make the same mistake twice. If I had a supplier who did not do what he was suppossed to or gave us bad parts.....either fess up make good on your promise or find a new door to knock on. Sounds to me like both sides made a decision and both guys have been stand up. Doing business over the internet is tough, and I would not want to be in anyone's position having to rely on customer satisfaction. Keep it coming....no judgement here!

I have had a few customers that were (reluctant) bad choice of words right now, or afraid to run the crank reluctor type ignition which I prefer because your timing is many times more precise when it’s of the crank. Anyway because of some people not liking crank triggers and cam position sensors I’m offering LS1's with a HEI style distributor for the guy’s that are intimidated by the LS1 ignition system. One plus to the HEI is the timing curve is very easly adjusted.

Thunder did all he said and plenty he didn't say. I am a big believer in fate and fate didnt want me to have that motor. I know where it is going to live should be interesting and it is going to a better home than this old man coulda give it. I would never tell the secrets of the cam thunder no worry there. I also spent the evening with an old airboater who built some pretty rank car boats before they were popular. If I call him old he really is old LOL. antways he grabbed my distributor and in just a few mintes and a few hits with a hammer it is re-worked. He helped me with some valve geometry and a bunch of other stuff. I have a favorite saying that I use " people don't come with warning labels" thunder and this old man both need one on their foreheads for everyone to see. I told thunder things work a certain way for a certain reason even if we can't see it at the time. I told him that before we even knew what the problem was. My boat will not be rank like thunders is but it will be no pig either. I was happy with what I had before and it was getting tired and I knew it was time to start looking for a replacement engine. It blew up the day after the toy run. You bet at that point I was getting very aggravated and really until the last round I was holding it in pretty well Like I said it wasn't thunders fault... the trail just stopped in his shop. I really would suggest anyone wanting an engine get one from thunder .. however after spending some time around him I suggest you knjow what your ready for. I believe most would find the 500hp more than sufficient.

Thats my story and I am sticking to it. I wont have 600+ hp right now but never say never. He get more from each motor so maybe I will wait a while and revisit in top secret mode. Thunder can we make one of those things look like a regular small block HMMM thats a thought.

Thunder, what does it take to put crank-fired ignition on an otherwise stock small block? Does it require a new crankshaft?

BF

I know MSD offers a crank trigger setup that goes on the ballancer. There are probably other companys that also do it, I just know of the MSD unit.

Thanks Bravo .... so how would you drive the oil pump? Is there a slug that you drop in up top?

BF

The MSD crank trigger signals the ignition off the crank however it still requires the use of a distributor to (distribute) the spark. It is a very simple and accurate way to run your ignition.
