Numbers on the rudders

A

IIRC, the letters must be 6" high when placed on the rudders and with the spaces equal to the width of the letters, is that correct?

And how wide do the letters have to be?

And, I've seen a lot of people put the sticker on their seat. Am I going to be legal, or can a young gun give me a ticket for that?

I remember this being talked about, but I searched for a few minutes and couldn't find what I was looking for.

Thanks

Due to the ambiguity of enforcement, I have a sticker on my seat, and on my rake.....put the letters on the rake with proper spacing. Legally(from what I understand) airboats can put letters on the rudders, but on Kissimmee, I have been stopped for improper letters on the rudders. So to rid any BS stops, I feel I am as legal as it gets'

I don't have a rake yet, and when I do, it will be tube.

I don't really want to put the numbers on the hull because I think they might get scraped by brush....

Is it ok to have two stickers? How did you get the extra one?

Numbers only have to be 3" high and on the rudders or hull. The sticker can be placed on the hull, seat, or rudders.

Numbering

The Florida registration number issued to a vessel is permanent and remains with the vessel as long as it is operated or stored in this state, even though its ownership may change.
The registration number issued to an undocumented vessel is to be painted or permanently attached to both sides of the bow (forward half) of the vessel and must be in block letters and numerals at least three inches high. The registration number must read from left to right, must contrast in color with the hull and be maintained in legible condition.

The prefix and suffix must be separated from the numerals by a space equal to the width of the digits, i.e., FL 0001 AB.

Decals

A decal signifying the year during which the registration certificate is valid will be issued with each registration certificate. The decal must be displayed on the port (left) side of the vessel. It may be placed immediately before or after the registration number. A decal issued to a federally documented vessel may be affixed to a window or windshield on the port side. Any decal for a previous year's registration must be removed from the vessel.

I think that is an OLD rule about the 6" letters on the rudders. As I understand it, it USED TO BE that if you wanted to run at night, you needed the large (6") letters on the rudders.

From http://myfwc.com/boating/safety/law_summary.htm
Registration numbers must be displayed on the forward half of the vessel on both sides above the waterline. The numbers must be bold block letters at least 3 high in a color contrasting to the hull.

The vessel registration decal must be renewed annually and is to be displayed within six (6) inches of, either before or after, the registration numbers on the port (left) side.

hope this helps.

Red - Don't mess up them cool rudders with some numbers!!!

matt.

My airboating days were twenty years ago, and back then we had
to have six inch letters on the rudders if the boat was used for
hunting. been out of it since before poly bottems looking forward
to getting back in it.

Matt, I don't think it will mess them up. I left a space at the top for the numbers.

I know a sign shop that will cut your letters out and stick them to a single sheet so you can put them all on at once and get them straight.

I will also have him make the letters look like they are stenciled on like the numbers on the old fighter planes. I think it will look neat.

ANOTHER THING I WAS TOLD YOUR BOW LIGHT CAN NOT BE SEEN FROM THE OTHER SIDE HAS TO BE BLOCK FROM SIDE TO SIDE ! 4 FT FROM THE FRONT OF BOAT ! EVEN DAY TIME THEY CAN WRITE U UP !

Fatboy, I have a one-piece nav light that I flipped the lens in and mounted upside down under the front seat. I think it is close to 4' from the front of the boat, but now when I put a grass rake on, I wonder if they will count that?

The standard is 120 degrees for each color measured from the center line of the hull. It can be mounted anywhere on the boat. Most sailboats have them mounted in the rigging maybe 10' above the hull and near midships. Nothing I have ever seen says it has to be mounted on the nose of the boat. Just visible from centerline out to 120 degrees.

If there is a real question about this I would pick up the phone and give the Goast Guard a call.

Nav lights can be mounted anywhere on the boat as long as they are visable. If you have a seat or a person blocking their view they are no good to anyone. They can be mounted as high as you like but the stern/masthead light must be at least 1 meter above the red and green running lights.
