Oil consumption

Just bought a used boat with a 454 belt drive. Runs great, burns about a quart of oil every 2 hrs of use. Is this normal? I know every Ford I ever owned burned oil when run hard, thought this might be normal. No leaks noticeable. Maybe the rings are leaking a little. If the hr mtr is to be believed, engine has 280 hrs on it. Any ideas??

No that's not normal for an automotive engine

Do you get a blueish-white smoke out the exhaust when idling? How about when you nail the throttle (check this out on the trailer with someone to help you). If it gets worse when you hit the throttle, the ring seal is bad.

If the boat sat up for a while, some of the rings might be stuck. If so, it should get better as you run it. Add a can of Sea Foam to your gas tank. Try getting it to operating temperature and then letting it cool as many times as possible in a day of running.

Otherwise, the rings/bores are probably just worn out, and that means rebuild time. Have your valves and guides redone during the rebuild process

good news, after running for about 4 hrs of engine time, oil consumption has stopped. Must have been the sitting up period like mentioned.
