oil output update

Thank you very much to those of you who posted info for me.

I checked the oil tonight and according to the dipstick there are about 5 quarts in the engine. I went out for a 30 minute ride with no oil leaking at all. I warmed the boat up to about 230 degrees and again idiling at 20 psi oil pressure. I think the pressure goes up while running to about 40 psi, but I will have to check for sure. After the boat was warm I did notice a small amount of smoke/steam coming out of the breather tube when the engine was reved up. There was also a little white smoke out of one of the pipes when taking off.

Is it safe to run with 5 quarts of oil in the 0 290? This boat has two oil coolers on it if that makes a difference.

I will post some pictures tommorow, thanks again for the help.

Your going to have to get that leak-down check man. I would be concerned about that cylinder.

There was also a little white smoke out of one of the pipes when taking off.

To me thats very worrysome.

Schleppy,

I really hope you don't have an aircraft engine running at 230 degrees engine temp. Most of us look for 150. Also, some smoke from a recent rebuild is normal - it can take up to 100 hours for new rings to seat. The most worrisome detail you talk about is oil pressure. I have not seen a rebuilt Lycoming run that low - Continentals -- yep, all the time / Lycomings?? Nope. Find out who your buddies with light airplanes use for mechanical work and get that independent opinion from a certified AC powerplant guy.
