Oil Temperature?

I recently switched my oil temp gauge from a non electric oil sump mount to an electric mount that gets the oil between the engine and cooler.

180-190 was my normal HIGH temp range. Now it has jumped up to 260-280 according to the new gauge. The motor hasn't lost any power and still sounds real smooth...no popping or cracking. I know the oil will be hotter there than the sump but is it really that much hotter?

That sounds strange to me, seems really high. Not sure what motor you are running. On the 0-540s I know around here, the gauge is either mounted where the versatherm mounts to the block (and where the oil comes out of the block) or in the oilpan. The ones mounted next to the block show a quicker response, but 180 is what it might hit if run hard in grass for 30 minutes or longer. At cruise, the 0-540 I run barely breaks 160.

I know that on aircraft, oil temperatures hitting 210 or above is something to watch out for.

I guess its mounted to the "versatherm". I'm running an o-470. I'm thinking about trying a new gauge. I don't see a hundred degree or more difference between the block and the sump being acurate. I guess it could though.

Some of those electric guages are terribly innacurate. Put the sender in a pot of hot water and compare it to your wifes candy thermometer.

Reckon how he knew Your Wife had a candy thermometer? :D

Thanx, Gben
