oil usage 220 GPU

OK ,I know about pitted cylinders, but my GPU went through 6 qts in 2 real time hours with out running the snot out of it.Now I pulled all the plugs and there is no signs of oil deposits.I have and oil/air separator on it,and no leaks. The only signs of oil is at the end of my vent tube at the top of my cage where it exits. Now I know it has to be blow-by , but shouldn't I see deposits on the plugs? :? :? :? :? :? :?

a 2nd bow by for the 220's is a good Idea it ill help it breath better .

you can't really tell much of anything by pulling the plugs it could be rings or your valve could have build up etc... this is where DES normally chimes in "you need to do a leak down test"

goldhunter is correct, do a leak down test. These 220 GPUs are a different engine for sure. I had a Lycoming O-290 that had bad rings and the plugs would be full of oil. That cylinder was down to 62 over 80 and had to be replaced. This is what most aircraft engines do but not the 220 GPU.

On the 220 GPU I had two cylinders that were in the mid 50s over 80 and they have both been replaced. I was using about 2 quarts per hour. The plugs were perfect. Not a drop of oil on the plugs. I have no idea why but the oil slips past the rings and fouls the Lycoming plugs and the combustion on the 220 GPU slips past the rings and blows the oil out the bypass.

Check your air/oil separator also to make sure it is draining oil back to the engine. It may be plugged or you have so much pressure in the crankcase it is not letting the oil drain back. Replace the cylinders two at a time and you will see a difference.

def. check the oil cooler cause i was having major blow by as i posted a topic on, but i put a new oil cooler on it and my blow by stopped. i used half the oil that i used too.

I've seen them blow a lot of oil like that if you are running more oil in the pan then the motor likes. My lycoming 200 only liked about 6 or 6and 1/2 quarts any more and it would just burn it back to 6 or 6 and 1/2. Sometimes you have to " let it find the sweet spot" as long as that spot still has adequate oil for the engine. I guess what I'm saying is you don't have to run at the top oil mark on the dipstick. Oh heck just run that bow by tube to the front of the boat to replace the sprayer nozzles

OK guys, thanks for the input, but if my oil temp stays under 200 what would a restricted oil cooler have to do with blow by?

JMO....I do what MYIXIEWRECKED is talking about. My GPU was doing the same thing and someone suggested to cut back on the oil level to 9 quarts.....solved the problem. It still uses oil but not like it was.

Again Just My Opinion
