OK... who was on SR44 w/their airboat last night??

Got dispatched to SR 44 at the Sumter/Citrus County line last night (near midnight) reference to a 911 call stating that approximately three airboats were actually on SR 44 creating a traffic hazard.

While headed to the call, caller called back and said that the airboats had returned to the water.

When my partner and I got there, no airboats... I was wanting to see who was there and what kind of boat they had....

Must have been fun... but not what the airboat community needs right now.

It wasn't me, sounds like fun though. If you want to come to Brevard County or Orange County I would be glad to take you out for a ride.

You should try to make one of the monthly runs if you want to see a bunch of boats in action.

I looked around some and found no evidence that boats had been up the ramp, you know, water etc. I did see where perhaps a boat had been taken out via a vehicle say w/in the past hour or so.

It is possible that someone heard the noise and called in a bogus complaint... who knows.

When I say it must have been "fun", in no way do I support such activity as like said before, we all pay.

This makes only the second airboat related call that I have ever had.

Perhaps your right about that.
Give airboaters the benefit of the doubt.

I know darned well airboats have hit the highway before.....In the good old days.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Those days are over.

Probably wasn't a good idea back then either.

I have to ask. Is it against the law to cross a HWY with a AB? Say HWY 50 or HWY 46. I have seen it done. They came up on the hill, let the traffic go by, shot across, hit the river and disappeared. All in less than 1 minute. It did look cool. They did not drive down the road, but across it. No beer in his hand!!! Hal

Cowboy, one night "many, many years ago" I heard that three boats had (with much encouragement from Mr. Budweiser I'm sure :) ) decided to have a little parade on the main road from the public ramp at Steinhatchie while there was a nice rain falling.

Now ya' gotta understand I wouldn't be able to condone that kind of behavior today, but ....... :D .

We were a bit younger back in the good-ole-days. Young & dumb & going to live forever. Hell yeh it was a good idea back then. Was fun too.

Thats how we got the tales some of us can sit around the campfire and dazzle the younger generations with. Nobody believes them but more than a few are the gospel truth, and we survived it too ! Maybe thats the most amazing part of all !

There was a time though Florida folks didn't mind the "SOUND" of an airboat close by. With open stacks too !

Thats what Florida WAS.

Scotty :D

One afternoon a friend and I were being checked at the ramp by a FWC officer while returning from an afternoon ride. During our encounter with the officer just a few yards away 3 guys in an airboat jump out of a canal crossed SR 512 and slid in the canal on the other side of the road as my buddy, myself & the FWC officer watched. I asked the FWC officer if that was legal or not and he didn't answer me. The officer didn't seem concerned in the least. He just got in his truck and drove away as the 3 guys that jumped the road loaded their boat on the trailer.

So is it legal to cross a highway in an airboat?

I guess it is......

Very few things are absolute under the law. Legislators appear to be quite incapable of articulating the English language in a manner that is specific and direct. instead they prefer to leave everything open to interpretation, thereby creating a friggin industry rather than performing a service!

Just my opinion anyway.

One day you might get a citation for crossing a road the next you might not.

Thinkin' about this, the only thing that may put you in a spot is that for the period of time you are actually on the right-of-way, it's possible that you could be required to have all of the same features as any other motor vehicle .... brake lights, turn signals, license plate, etc.

It would take a real jerk to cite you for that, but there are a few out there.

know of a 18ft deckovered 502 that ran 2 or so miles up a highway over a bridge and outran the law.......got caught later on that day, but a story for the ages!

If you could get Waterthunder to go over the road QUIETLY (80dB) ........just don't become a possum in headlights.

Does a tree make a sound falling in the forest if no one is there to hear it?

There are advantages to quiet.........

FYI: That's the area that Trudy lives in. Very real she heard or saw one and exploited it.

:THE LIGHTER SIDE ! D HAVENT SEEN NO LAW SAYING YOU MUST KEEP YOUR BOAT IN THE WATER ! ALL YOU NEED IS A SLOW MOVING EMLEMS ON THE BACK ! TWO CANS OF BLACK FLAG DUCT TAPE TO THE CAGE ! AND SAY OFFICER THIS MY NEW SPRAY RIG ! JUST TRYING TO MY PART OFFICER ! JUST THINK ! A TRAILOR PARK MOTIVATOR ,SO THEY JUST DONT SIT AROUND ! ! A LEAF BLOWER ! TREE CLEANER ! CLOTHES DRYER ! BUG ZAPPER ! AND THE BEST OF ALL A MEDICAL BREAK THREW , FOR THE ANTI S NO MORE E.D CAUSE WE GIVE THEM SUCH A HARD -- , EVERTIME THEY SEE US ! AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL WE GET ONE TOO! :D :D :D JUST A FEW PLUS THINGS FOR US ! I AM SORRY , I JUST GOT PUTS ! PUTTING UP WITH TRUDYS SH-- !

Agreed on the jerk of an officer. But I'll bet you could get legal for even the most cranky officer having the worst day of his life if you had one of those big orange reflective triangles like farm vehicles have.

maybe.

I believ citrus county has an ordinance against airboats on roadways. I probably am wrong about that but it seems I read it somewhere before.

I wish i had a boat that would cross a road i am boatless :(

It's probably like everything else....there is no ordinance until it becomes a problem. I think there are statutes in place that could be used to stop airboats from crossing highways but it's probably not enforced since it hasn't been a problem. I am willing to bet LEO's would handle it differently if complaints started coming in.
