Operation Airboat Update

Well, I've finally gotten all the donations packed up into boxes (I know it took a while but I was waiting on some more donations to come by mail). We ended up with 26 boxes which weigh about 10lbs apiece or so.

Each box included some wipes, jerky, several issues of outdoors magazines, at least 5 letters from schoolchildren, some candy, toothbrush and toothpaste, and some SAO stickers as well as some other odds and ends that you donated. Let me say that everyone who donated or helped out with the media ROCKS!!! You came through for these servicemembers and you efforts are going to put some smiles on a lot of faces!!!

The Auburndale post office is going to open 45 minutes early for me tommorrow to process the packages. I'm not sure about the postage yet but I am pretty sure that we have enough. Great Job there too everyone!!!

I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone invloved. I am really bad with names and I apologize. So I don't risk leaving anyone out I won't mention any names but if you helped put this together in any way, THANK YOU!!!! We will definitely do this again some time.

Just got back from the post office. We spent over 45 min processing all the boxes. Final cost was $326.00 and some change. I didn't use priority though, it would have been about $10 more a box. It only makes it get to New York quicker any ways. Operation Airboat I is COMPLETE!!!!!

Here is an email I just got from a friend whose in Afghanistan....

Hello everyone,

Just a quick update....the elections are upon us. Start on Sunday and last
thru Monday so things have pretty much come to a stand still for us. They don't
won't us out on the roads for fear of attacks, so we are pretty much stuck here
at the "Alamo" for the next couple of days. I'm probably gonna go out
of my mind in those few days. Guess I will hit the gym and finish my homework
for school. Have an oral presentation to give on Tuesday and a paper due as
well. Actually, I do have to go on a security detail tomorrow for a little bit
in the morning, that just came up. I'm surprised after they put out that no one
would be leaving the compound during the election time. We had steak and
lobster for dinner tonight, actually we have that every Friday night, but
tonight they cooked the steaks on an open grill....it was really good. I broke
down from my diet and had some ice cream too, they brought in real american ice
cream, it was a nice treat. The weather here is starting to get real nice, a
bit cool in the mornings and evenings. Still seems hot during the day, but the
evenings especially have been just beautiful. They say winter starts to hit
around the 1st of December, it will actually get cooler before then, but that is
when we should start to see some snow. January and February are usually the
coldest, and if they have a winter anything like last year, they had 6 feet of
snow right here at the Alamo....WOW!!!!! I'm not used to that, but it should be
fun, we can make snow angels and have snowball fights. The hills here will make
nice for riding a sled or the hood of a hum-v, whichever you can find first.
Driving will be very interesting, they don't have snow plows, so you see Afghan
men out there with shovels clearing the path. They say the scenery is
absolutely beautiful during the winter with all the snow capped mountains. Plus
during the winter, the insurgents go into hybernation like a bear, so the
fighting should slow down consideralby. Hopefully the elections will go well
and be one step closer to helping this country become more stable, but then I
hear most of the government officials are crooked anyway, so who knows what will
happen. Well, thats about it for now, hope all is well on the homefront.
Thanks again to all those who have sent things for the kids or for me. Visited
with the refugee kids on Thursday and handed out some toys, candy and flip
flops. You should have seen the girls faces who got shoes, smiles from ear to
ear, they were so happy. And the toys, what kid doens't like to get toys or
candy, so it was a pretty good day. Makes you fell good to help them out even
when they don't seem very thankful, but then again all their culture has ever
taught them was give me, give me. Saw one boy try to take a toy away from one
of the girls and before I could get over there to help her out, she commenced to
kicking his butt..it was quite funny. Well, ok, gonna go for now. Talk to you
