Ordered A Prop And Need Help

I just ordered a new 74" Stump Puller from Whirlwind. (Thanks Faron)

Just have a question. I got an e-mail from Whirlwind stating the following:

"I need to let you know that for the direct drive Cadilac engine, if yours does not have a counterweighted crankshaft, then you will need to have a harmonic dampner. If you don't have either, then the propeller warranty is void (as with all propeller manufacturers)."

I have a stock 500 Cadillac. How do I tell If I have the Counterweighted Crank or dampner. I'm not a motor nut so it might be obvious but I missed it.

Thanks,

Dan

Call them up to clarify the instructions.Cadillacs are internaly balanced , the early models had stamped steel crank pulleys and a cheesy harmonic dampener the latter 500 used heavy cast pulleys and no dampener you can buy an after market performance dampener from a cadillac performance parts vendors such as mts, potter, cadco .It,s all about the harmonics ,cadis fire so hard they need to be tamed down. PS some use a billet steel flex plate ,weight helps smooth out the vibes.

thanks,

Thats the kind of info I need to know. I need to go out and double check it but I think it has a 1" thick piece of steel with the timing mark cut into it. She said that a stock dampener would be sufficient if it has one.

look behind and underneath the crank pulley It will be made of metal and with a little bit of rubber sandwiched between metal.won't have any timing marks on it . it be hard to see feel for it.

Harmonics can be a real PIA. Not all Cadillacs have it but some do. I was unfortunate enough to have a real time with it. I broke three flex plates, three sets of Cloyes timing gears (on the crank), and one crank pulley hub. All these broke at separate times within about a four month period and left me stranded every time. I learned my lesson and had my rotating assembly balanced when I rebuilt my engine and I installed a Dampener. That ended my problems and I ran about a year before I went with a gearbox.

Ran a 72" stumppuller on a dd 500 worked just fine.would think a 74" would be better maybe.
