Painting an old Aluminium Hull

Need some info on painting a old Al Hull.

The hull is old and weathered. Do you hit it with a chemical or scotch brite pad to clean it up.?

I am looking at a camo pattern when done, nothing pretty or fancy. Woods boats

What do use use for priming. Is it specific for the paint that you use.

Your information would be greatly appreciated. The A's through Z's. Thanks

I would strip it, clean it, scotch brite and prime it before painting. I like DuPont, so, I'd use two part Vari-Prime for the primer. Imrom is a great paint for aluminum, but dangerous to paint without a breathing outfit. Nothing wrong with acrylic enamel either and a lot safer to paint with.

I like Jet-Strip for taking paint off. It's usually $18.00 per gallon. Two gallons should be enough for most boat hulls.

I would also like to paint my boat camo, except it is glass. It is in good shape and clean. What should I do for prep and what kind of paint do I need. Thanks

Definately don't use Jet-Strip on a fiberglass boat. If it is clean, just scuff it with scotchbrite pads, clean it with an appropriate solvent and paint a light base color. I'd use acrylic enamel. Go to Cabela's and get a camo kit and finish the camo with puff cans. They have those at Cabela's also.

Camo looks like more work than I'd care to tackle, but I've seen some very nice work done by some on this site. Good luck.

I use a 3 step process by Richard's Paints here in Melbourne

It's an Epoxy-Urathane blend that wears like iron.

I started out with a sandblasted hull.

The first step is a chemical wash etcher that "opens the pours" of the metal.

Second step is the primer coat.

Third is the actual color.

I used marsh green on the hull & marsh brown on the rigging.

The boat disappears in the willows during duck season.

It's not cheap, but worth every penny.
