Painting the inside of a hull .....

Olf Art

Silent Prop
R. I. P.
I apologize if this has been covered somewhere before. If so please direct me to that thread.

The gelcoat on the inside of my hull is starting to show some weathering. The boys in Polk City who built it want $1600 to freshen it up, and I think that sounds more than a little steep if you know what I mean.

Has anybody painted the inside of their fiberglass hull with good results, and if you did, what did you use?

Olf

I think we used laquer and i think it was actually tractor paint you can get it at tractor supply its pretty cheap compared to gel coat and its tough i dont know if you can roll it we sprayed ours . in my photo album all the orange and black are auto/tractor paint and it came out pretty good.

Hey i just talked to my dad and he said he used etching primer to make it stick and the paint was automotive polyurethane i asked him about rolling it he said "i dont reckin why not" .

I not long ago painted my entire boat Inside and out and I also used polyurathane. I sprayed it on, I bought the primer that the paint called for on boat apps. it is kinda rubberized so it wont crack the paint when flexing and it turned out really good very tough. I bought it from carQuest paint supply made by Valpar House of Colors. it took about 2 qt with about 10% thinner for the inside primer and about the same for the final paint all inside about the same for the out side maybe a little less because i did'nt have to paint the bottom.

I have been painting most of my life and I have painted a lot of fiberglass boats I would first wash the inside that you are going to paint first with some stong soap and clorox mixed together then use a good automotive epoxy primer I use a lot of Ditzler paint made by PPG but there is a lot of good paints out there and then get a good automotive paint with a hardener and a flex additive to put in it so it will be tuffer and resist fuel.

Olf, your boat looks good now. But when Stratton gets done with it- OOOH BOY!!! It's gonna be BITCHIN!!

Almost makes me want a carboat.

Don't go painting polyurethane without a fresh air supply. If you don't have a fresh air mask I would paint it with Acrylic enamel instead of poly urethane enamel. Gelcoat is just as bad. You can't get the stuff out of your lungs. It's plastic. Tough paint but bad for your health.

If i want it to be smooth and shinney I would use "AWL GRIP" They use it on million dollars fishing boats!!!!! Really good stuff. It comes in 2 and 3 part paint. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to use it. You can also add glass beads to make non skid.

Truck bed liner is not a bad idea!!! Its thick, flexible and tuff stuff. When rolled on, it is rough like non skid, so you won't slip and bust a##!!!!

Take the boat by a spray on liner and get a quote. The roll on option from wall mart will be the cheapest route.

It's all about the prep. No oil, no grease, no water. Hit the gelcoat with a greenie(scotch brite pad) and see if you get good bonding!!!!

Good luck, not that big of a job, but it take time!!!!!!!! DSD

Thanks, y'all. I appreciate ALL the reponses.

I see a LOT of options before I plunk down $1600 to have it redone by the folks who built it. I know there's no such thing as a warranty on something like this, but they DID build the hull, and only 6 yrs. ago, so I thought they might go a little lighter on the ol' man than that. Whew!!

Sniper, I agree that 90% of a paint job is in the preperation that you've done before you ever snap on the gun. The automotive urethanes sound good to me ..... they should self-etch some with their agressive solvents and hey, if I have to do it over again in a couple of years I think I can still come in somewhere way under $1600

YOU ARE RIGHT THE PAINT NOW DAY THE SOLVENTS IT WILL STICK ! AND IF YOU WEB IT YOU CAN PUT A LITTLE PAINT IN A JAR PUT IT IN THE FRIG OVER NITE SHOOT IT WITH LOW PRESSURE AND WEB WHAT COLOR YOU WANT IT WILL LOOK PROFESSANEL-- I SPELL IT THAT WAY ! :D FOR 1600 I WILL DO IT FILL IT WITH BEER AND BRING GRANDMA SOMETHING SPECIAL ! :D

Fat, for $1600 we can paint that sucker with Sherwin-Williams flat exterior house paint and and have beer to last us til it's gotta be painted again .... :D .

Thanks Swamp ..... I just need to touch up some of those places where the through-bolts from the new stuff left old rust marks on the hull stringers.
You know how that goes. Once you start touchin' up it usually turns into a repaint. I might be able to just rpaint the stringers and get away ith it.
